Clarissa Garner, b. 1824, Tuddenham (Suffolk)
« on: Sunday 23 March 08 20:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm struggling to track down CLARISSA GARNER b. 1824 in Tuddenham, Suffolk. I have located her in the 1841 census as living with her parents in Tuddenham, but from thereon -- nothing!

I have posted this in the Norfolk board because Clarissa definitely had at least two children (illegitimately) in Thetford (I've got the birth certificates for these). These are:

1. Edward Garner b. 1845
2. Augusta Garner b. 1847

I've searched all the resources I can think of on the internet, but no trace of Clarissa after Augusta's birth in 1847. No marriage or death record (although it could be that any parish record is not posted on the 'net yet). No index to be found on Free BMD... and so I'm now a bit stuck.

Can anyone help me?

Thank you!

On the 1851 - there is a Susanna Garner aged 9mths with Augusta with grandmother Elizabeth Garner - was she also Clarissa's child?

Where is Edward in 1851?

Hi Carol,

Thanks for that! I'm not too sure about Susannah, as I've not had her birth certificate! It's quite possible that she belongs to Clarissa.

Augusta is Clarissa's daughter. Clarissa's parents are Joseph Garner (b. 1801, miller) and Elizabeth Everard (b. circa 1799)

In 1851, Edward is living with Clarissa's sister, Eleanor, and Elenor's husband Thomas Rice in Tuddenham.

Hi Iria,

That's so kind of you, thanks! I did already have that info though. But thanks once again.

Kind regards,

Claire

PS: Clarissa is part of this family from Tuddenham/Brandon/Thetford:

Joseph Garner m Elizabeth Everard
1. Eleanor b. 1822 (m. Rice)
2. CLARISSA b. 1824
3. Sarah Ann b. 1825 (m. Abrey)
4. Louisa b. 1827
5. Joseph b. 1828 (m. Martha Saunders)
6. George b. 1830
7. Emily b. 1831 (m. Wright)
8. Thomas Charles b. 1833 (m. Alice Chilton)
9. Hannah b. 1835
10. Elizabeth b. 1838
11. Susannah b. 1840
12. Augusta b. 1841

The two youngest girls, Susannah and Augusta, died fairly young and I'm assuming the Susannah and Augusta named in the 1851 census are named after them by their sibling/s.  :)

Hi

If Susannah was Clarissa's daughter - it means Clarissa was still alive in 1850 and still unmarried

Cheers Carole! Hmm, I guess the plot thickens! I've checked FreeBMD and a Susannah Maria Garner was born in the quarter of September 1850; in Thetford. I'll get a copy and  see if that helps.

ETA: If Susannah is Clarissa's, I wonder if Clarissa died in childbirth? Although I would have thought I could find a reference for her death certificate if so  :-\
