Justices of the Peace/WILLIAMS /death by choking
« on: Sunday 23 March 08 11:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have a family story that says, my poss GGGrandfather  WILLIAMS was a Judge and that he died when he choked on a cigar whilst trying to jump a gate.

I am aware that there was a Worcester family of Williams's in the 1800s, 3 of which were JPs. Does anyone have any information on this family. One of the JPs was  John Williams of Pitmaston, a well renowned fruit grower, information on him would also very much be appreciated.

John Williams of Pitmaston House

Hi

I wonder if you can help me.   I am trying to research the history of Pitmaston House which borders our property.

It is currently held by the local educational authority apparently bequeathed to the LEA for educational purposes by one of John Williams' descendents.   Do you have any knowledge of when it was transferred and whether there were any specific terms of the transfer?

Rumour has it, that it was bequeathed specifically for educational purposes hence why it was left to the Local educational authority (or one of its predecessors) however recently the main house has been sold to property developers subject to contract which has left myself and some of the neighbours a little perturbed that the parkland space that forms part of the LEA estate will be tarnished, the essence of the historic building and the 18th century walls and turrets will be eroded, with history and the legacy overlooked by the bullyboy developers.

From a personal perspective, I have made a request to purchase the gate house to try and preserve that little bit of history (even though it is already a grade 2 listed property) and to run my training office from,  however again, the property developers have outbid me with the view that they can turn it into a domestic dwelling which will inevitably result in character being eroded from what is a lovely building and part of the Worcester heritage.

I appreciate that this is something you are probably not aware of, however if you have any information regarding its final disposal from the family into state ownership it would be appreciated and help our battle to preserve history.

Very many thanks
