Daniel Barr + Margaret McPadden mid 1800's
« on: Saturday 03 April 04 20:58 BST (UK) »
Anyone got a Daniel Barr or Margaret McPadden in their family trees?

Have no idea which county they may have come from but believe they were married in Ireland before coming to UK.

Their first child was born in 1861 in Hartlepool and they then moved to Co Durham where the remainder of their children were born.

According to UK 1881 census Daniel was age 43 so born <1838> and Margaret age 41 so born <1840> give or take a few years for accuracy.

this site will display all barr and mcpadden bmd's in hartlepool, middlesbrough and stockton only from 1837.
a james mcpadden is registered for a middlesbrough birth in 1860.

Thanks got in there.

Saw the McPadden birth of James will check it out.  Could well be a cousin of Ellen Barr born 1860 (in our tree).

Had heard that families tended to move in family groups so its quite possible.  There's a couple of McPaddens in Durham during the 1881 census not far from Daniel & Margaret.

The other thing is if they originated from Ireland how did they get to Hartlepool?

Thanks again.

Were there ships that went from say N.Ireland to Hartlepool or would they have travelled across land from say Liverpool????

thousands of irish people came over to what was west hartlepool and hartlepool (two separate towns in those days). they more than likely docked in liverpool and they worked across to west hartlepool which was more or less a new town and full of jobs.

Hi There,
My husband's last name is McFadden but his grandfather's name was Stephen McPadden.  Seems Mr. McPadden changed the name once he emigrated to America, something about a stigma attached to the term "paddy wagons".  This Stephen McPadden was born in Ireland (not sure where), he served in WWI with the British Army and emigrated afterwards.  We've been trying to find some records of his military service or any info at all about him and the McPadden's.  Your post turned up when I searched the name.  Myself, I've been trying to locate any records regarding my family name: McGinley, I believe they were from Donegal.
God Bless, All.
Eileen McGinley McFadden
