COMPLETED South Australian Burials
« on: Saturday 22 March 08 00:39 GMT (UK) »
I have the deaths of 3 rellies in SA prior to 1896 but can't find where they were buried:
Peter JOHNSON/JOHNSTON, died 15/7/1869, Pt Adelaide, SA
John NELSON/NIELSON/NEILSON, died 13/5/1878, Hare St, Pt Adelaide, SA
Ellen/Helen/Nellie NELSON, died 1/5/1896, Glenelg, SA

I would've thought they would have been buried in either the (old) Alberton, Cheltenham or West Tce cemeteries but had no joy when searching the burial records for these.

If they were buried as paupers, would records exist?....I've had conflicting stories on pauper burials. Some say they were recorded, others say they weren't.

Can any kind soul give me either advice, or perhaps lookup assistance?

Cheers
Annie

Hi, Do you have the death certificates? If yes then the undertakers name MAYBE on there. If you do not have the certificates then can you go and view them at all?

This is the easy way of finding where a person has been buried by the certificate which normally does contain the undertakers name.

Most undertakers still exist from those early days as I have done a few death searches for some and have contacted the undertakers and they have sent what details they have on the person including the burial place

hope this helps

Hi, Shanko, and Annie.

We have been looking, on and off, for 16 years for Robert BROWN(E) ie, trying to find out where he came from, and how, etc.  Our last possibility seems to be trying to trace the undertaker, "P Gannori, Norwood, and High-Street, Kensington" who placed the funeral notice in the Register, Thursday 27 Jul 1893.  And/or the Informant on his Death Certificate is "J Steer Undertakers Assistant Payneham".

But the South Australian Genealogy & Heraldry Society Inc say the (undertaker) records don't go back that far.

Also, although in 1908, Robert's wife Louisa was buried "by the State" with him in the Payneham Cemetary.  (The Grave now dug up and re used, of course.)  So Payneham cemetary, at least, at least in 1908, recorded pauper's burials.

Another point ie, concerning West Tce Cemetary, although there is a computer touch screen at the entrance to the cemetary, we have found that this does not reflect all burials ie, if you phone the number given, you may be given details of someone not recorded on the screen.

Hi Shanko & Jeenie
Thanks for that imput.
I have the DC's for all 3 but only one lists the undertaker (Ellen's) which records them as being J E Gibson of Glenelg.......can't find them in either White or Yellow Pages though.
I've contacted the cemetery authorities for both Cheltenham & West Tce but no joy and have looked up the burial records (as opposed to headstone inscriptions) for the now defunct Alberton cemetery at the Mortlock library but once again, no joy!
This is really frustrating me as I thought if I could find at least 1 of them it would give me a lead to find the others.
Any further advice?
Cheers

Hello Annie
I know this forum is already completed on your search, but I have come across a name on my Bertram research in South Australia of Juliette Emilia Peterson nee NIELSON. Her father is listed in the SA registryy as Jonathan Emil NIELSON. She married William BERTRAM in 1889 in Robe SA, and had six children in this marriage, (a second for them both), with one bearing Kintore as a middle name (makes me think there were Scottish origins in there). Wondering if she might also be one of yours?

Hi Shanko!
Been a long time since I heard from you.  you said you had more info for me.  Our travels have continued but alas not to Jolly Old England.  Maybe another time.  I think I'll get to Australia before I get back to England.  Would really like to hear from you and learn what more you have on the Stiff's
Cheers!
