Caroline SHEPHERD or SHEPPARD bc 1822
« on: Friday 21 March 08 17:09 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me find more info re the parents/family of Caroline Shepherd.

She was married to John Radley in 1849 in East Retford and they lived in Nottinghamshire.  According to their marriage record Caroline's father was Joseph Shepherd ( his trade was a Glover) and the census returns listed Caroline's place of birth as Bath, Somerset.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Caroline does not appear to be on the 1841 census in any way that I can find, nor can I find a Joseph Shepherd who could be clearly identified as her father.

Since she would have been born about 1816-1821 she could only be located from Parish Records.

The only Caroline in the census of the right age and approximate location is at Crewkerne, age 25 in 1841 but with a father Henry, an agricultural labourer.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Thanks for your help - I did find Caroline Shepherd in the 1841 Census (age 20). Both she and John Radley were  listed as working at Babworth Hall, East Retford.

Have no idea if Caroline Shepherd's family remained in Bath - hopefully I can get a lead from the parish records.

Hi Sheenie,
Have just begun researching the Radley family and your information has been very useful re Caroline (John Radley) and Agnes Radley's mother Wilhelmina Brown (Rollo).  I notice the dates aren't recent but would love to be able to discuss with you.  Novice to this site so any help appreciated.

Hi Elizcr

Welcome to Rootschat - Agnes Radley (nee Brown) is my Gt Grandmother.  Have done a great deal of research on the Radley Family and have quite a lot of info for the Brown/Rollo lines etc which I would be happy to share with you.   If you let me know what info you have or require I can try and fill you in.

Once you have posted a few more messages on Rootschat I can then send you a PM (Personal Message) with more detail.

Regards
Sheenie

Hi Sheenie,
Great to hear from you!  Agnes is also my Gt. Grandmother and George my Gt. Grandad!  Harry Radley was my Grandad.  Which of the family is your grandparent?  Just about to call Johanna's son - so it's all happening for me today!  Will keep you posted.
I know George and Agnes had 14 children born living and have the names of the 10 living in 1911, also know Edward & Euphemia died in infancy - do you know who the other 2 are?  I see although Harry was 14 in 1911 he is not at home so my next job is trying to trace him.  Dad told me he did leave home to train as a jockey at some point but I don't know how I can find out.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi - I thought you might be Harry's Grand-daughter!!.  We've been in touch before and I will send you an e-mail (hopefully you will get it - if not you can let me know and I will send you a PM on this site).

I'm George's Grand-daughter by the way and you stayed with our family when you were little!  My Dad also told me the story of Harry training as a jockey and I believe it might have been Gainsborough.  Have lots of info to share with you.  Would you know if Johanna's son has any photo's of the family that we could get copies of?

George and Agnes' other two children were Alexander Ritchie Brown Radley (b13/5/1891) - he was killed in action in WW1 and buried in Belgium and David Brown Radley (b 8/7/1896) - he died in infancy.

Will be in touch soon
