Hello Ken

Thanks for that information. I have looked at both links. Another message has just come from "Scouseboy" so I'll have a look at that before I write to them and see what I can find out. I'll let you know if I'm lucky.

Pat

Hi Pat

Sorry I got the information from a directory. I doubt they have been kept. But I did find who took them over - http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2003/04/29/jam-today-for-chivers-staff-100252-12902821/

You could try them - http://www.applegate.co.uk/food-and-agribusiness/chivers-hartley-fruit-vegetables-preserving-processing-1322468.htm - they may have an archivist. They in turn are owned by HL Foods.

Hello

Thanks for the information on a Hartley's jam jar. I've got an address for Chivers-Hartley in Cambridge from Ken. I will write to both addresses (one at a time) and see if they hold the Employee Records I am after. It was my G Aunt Margaret Ann Woodside who was working there in 1898 and had probably been there for 10 years. Her brother (my Grand-Dad) John William Woodside worked as a Lorry Driver for Jacob's biscuits for 40 years.
Thanks again

Pat

According to the label on a jar of Harley's jam in front of me now  their current address is   The Premier Foods Group, Bridge Road,  Long Sutton,  Spalding. Lincs  PE12   9EQ.

Jacobs cream crackers  or a biscuit factory  used to be next door didnt it?

I have been down Long Lane in the last six months.   A lot of my family are buried in everton cemetery on Long Lane.     I thought I was right when I recall that United Biscuits have still got a big factory on Long Lane.

If records were kept they may be archived at the main library in William Brown St. or the University, worth trying.

Hello Scouseboy

I have written to Premier Foods regarding Nelson's Employee Records. I found a contact form on their website.
I will let you know if I hear anything from them

I think the biscuit factory used to sell bags of broken biscuits to their employees.

Have you ever tried Jam on cream crackers?

Hello Purlin

Thank you for the info. I have written to Premier Foods who now own Nelsons so I will see what they have to say first.
Thanks

Pat

Did they also make marmalade?

I was once told that during the war (or maybe shortly after )  crates of Oranges were washed up on the beach known as the Cast Iron Shore ( near the Dingle).     So all the children rushed down to salvage what they could as Oranges had been impossible to obtain during the war.    They did not taste very nice, apparently because they were the sort to make marmalade with.  Has anyone else heard this tale?

Hello Scouseboy
In reply to your previous message. Yes I have jam on my crackers and I also like "BOVRIL" spread on crackers. We used to be able to get Jacob's biscuits here in Australia. I don't remember having broken biscuits at my Grand-Dad's.
I am sure Nelson's made marmalade. We used to get Nelson's jams here too.
I had cousins who lived in Dingle House, Dingle and I used to go with them to the Cast Iron Shore and on the Overhead Railway. I used to live in Maghull so quite different.
