AINTREE,LIVERPOOL. NELSON'S JAM
« on: Friday 21 March 08 14:30 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me establish when Nelson's jam factory at Aintree was built? Apart from that I'd also like to know whether they used stoneware jars for their jam. I suspect these might have been made at Melling Pottery.

There was a jam factory opposite Everton Cemetery Long  Lane Walton ..... I'm not sure if it was Nelson's or Hartley's ........ we used to go looking for jam jars to take to school for cashing in to buy dogs for the blind !! ( maybe there was 2 .... it's a long time ago !!  ::) ) and I think Nelsons made marmalade in their stoneware pots .... !!

My mum worked in Hartley's before she was married. She had a bad scalding accident when a vat of hot jam spilt on her leg. No compensation in those days and she was scarred for life!!

Nelson's Preserving Co Limited was also on Long Lane. It is listed in the 1925 Directory, but not in the 1911.

Hartley's was established in 1868.

Many thanks all.  Much appreciated.  I think Nelsons were taken over in 2002 and then closed.

Hello Ken
Just noticed your message from 2008. Do you happen to know where the Employee Records of Nelson's Jam Factory, Long Lane, Aintree would be held?
My Great Aunt worked there in 1898.
Thanks

Hi Pat

Sorry I got the information from a directory. I doubt they have been kept. But I did find who took them over - http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2003/04/29/jam-today-for-chivers-staff-100252-12902821/

You could try them - http://www.applegate.co.uk/food-and-agribusiness/chivers-hartley-fruit-vegetables-preserving-processing-1322468.htm - they may have an archivist. They in turn are owned by HL Foods.

According to the label on a jar of Harley's jam in front of me now  their current address is   The Premier Foods Group, Bridge Road,  Long Sutton,  Spalding. Lincs  PE12   9EQ.

Jacobs cream crackers  or a biscuit factory  used to be next door didnt it?
