Hello Tom,
I'm on the trail again and have found another possible
marriage for James Burt born 1719 in Wemyss.
In this marriage below, James married Isabel Ballingal
in Wemyss - July 1740.
If this is the correct James, it would mean that he was
21 years old at the time of his marriage.
3. JAMES BURT - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 11 JUL 1740 Wemyss, Fife, Scotland
I've also found another James Burt born 1709 in Kircaldy
who might just be a contender for the marriage that
took place between a James Burt and Ann(a) Greig in 1736.
This James was the son of Robert Burt and Margaret Wilkie
(details below).
1. ROBERT BURT - International Genealogical Index

5. THOMAS BURT - International Genealogical Index

It's the first time I've ever worked forwards to try and find an
ancestor, but it's certainly an interesting exercise. Will see if
I can find a some kind of family connection, I certainly
have plenty to go for here - thanks to you!
Talk again soon.
Chris
Hello All,
After such a nice thank you from "Mudlark", how could I
possibly not try to go that extra mile and give her a bit
more help with her BURT family? In a private e-mail to
her I suggested that she may want to cast her net around
the towns and villages aroung the coastal areas of Fife.
It is possible to see Extracted Marriage Records that tell
us that the bride and bridegroom quite frequently came
from different parishes. I'll give her a good example of that,
and at the same time introduce her to another significant
branch of the BURT family.
James BURT married an Ann (or Anna) GREIG
on the 12th of November, 1736 and there are
two Extracted Marriage Records that confirm that event:
one at Abbotshall and one at Kinghorn.
Their children:
Agnes BURT extracted cert for chr. 15th August, 1737 at Abbotshall.
Margaret BURT extracted cert for chr. 14th October, 1739 at Abbotshall.
William BURT extracted cert for birth
3rd June, 1742 at Abbotshall.
Janet BURT extracted cert for birth
3rd July, 1750 at Abbotshall.
Isabella BURT extracted cert for birth
12th March, 1753 at Abbotshall.
James BURT extracted cert for birth
7th July, 1757 at Abbotshall.
Now, old Doubting Thomas looked at James Burt, the husband
of Anna Greig and thought, if he married in November 1736
is it possible that he married when he was
17 years of age? Why would I want to know that?
Well, remember that posting I made about George Burt
who married Margaret Law? They had a son,
James Burt who was born on the 28th of February, 1719
at Wemyss, which is only about 4 miles from Abbotshall.
Is it possible that their son married Anna Greig at
Abbotshall? One thing that intrigued me was
that the second eldest daughter of James Burt
and Anna Greig was Margaret Burt who was christened
on 14th October, 1739
Some of you may recall that when I wrote about the old
Scots system of "naming patterns", the second eldest
daughter was usually named after the mother or father's
mother. Well, James Burt's mother was named Margaret
Law. The thing that spoils that rather neat scenario is that
the oldest son should be named after his father's father,
and I see no George in their family! Still, there are
quite significant gaps in the above list of children, so
perhaps there are children missing from the list.
Am I whistling in the wind?
Kind Regards,
Tom.
