Whitehaven. Andersons Cake Shop
« on: Tuesday 18 March 08 19:10 GMT (UK) »
I have information that my Grandmother used to be "In Service" or work at Andersons Cake shop in Whitehaven. I am thinking she would have been about 14years old and about 1913/14. I would be interested if anyone has any information about this business or could tell me where in Whitehaven it was.  Many thanks  Lincsbabe. ;D

Hi Lincsbabe.

I wasn't around when your grandmother was in service, but if it's the bakery I'm thinking of, it was still around when I was growing up and it was in King Street.  We used to go in.  I don't think I've got anything with it in here, but someone may.  Or wht about the 1901 census?  It may have been on, even if your grandmother wasn't.

Best wishes

The 1914 Kelly's Directory has

ATKINSON, Jessie Isabella (Miss) confctnr, 17 Lowther St

(same entry in 1910 Directory)

I think it true to say that Lowther St was the best street in town.

One cannot always rely on street numbering being consistent, but in 1901, 17 Lowther St was the home of Thomas HANNAH, Draper.
Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened.

Hi there!

I know this discussion was a while ago but I wonder if anyone can help! I am trying to remember the name of a cake shop in Whitehaven that, coincidently, MY Grandma worked in as a young girl! She told me the name of the shop many a time but it now escapes me, though I think I would recognise it if I heard it. Anderson's doesn't ring a bell though, although I seem to think it was a surname, possibly beginning with "E". She left the shop when she was 17, which would have been around 1920.

Another coincidence Lincsbabe, is that a family called McGuirk moved in to the house my Grandma's family moved out of in Harrington! I wonder if they are the same family!!

Chocs.

Hi Martin

Welcome to Rootschat!

I can't place your baker's.  I'm pretty sure the other main one I remember was Rae's.  Thinking about names begionning with "E", the only one I can think of which might ring a bell, is Eastwood, but I'm not sure if it was a baker's or not.

I hope you enjoy Rootschat as much as I have.  You'll get loads of help here.

Best wishes

PS I think there was an Ayre's at one stage and there might have been a branch of Birketts.

I looked in 1901 Directory but nothing obvious.

I'm tryng to remember the name of the one we used to go in a lot round the corner from Duke Street in King Street. ::) ::) ::)

I'll ask the family.

Good luck!

Hi :)

Speaking to family at weekend, reminded me of the name I'd forgotten!  - From the sixties old age!!

It was at the Duke St end of King street if I remember correctly - can't remember spelling, but it was Furness??? bakery.

I was also reminded that they had a van which went out of town.  I think I just about remember that.

I know they made great date slices!

Best wishes

Consulted a 89 year old relative, he said the shop was located about where Michael Moons Bookshop is now. there was a lady in there who's husband was a foreman with the Whitehaven Electricity Corp.#

Another shop in the same street was Batties.
