Completed, thanks - Stutton, Tadcaster, what sort of school?
« on: Tuesday 18 March 08 00:43 GMT (UK) »
In 1861 census (RG9/3541 fol.46 p.14) a relative was boarding at a school in Stutton Grove, Stutton-with-Hazelwood, near Tadcaster.    There was a schoolmaster, seven assistant teachers, 6 domestic staff, and 98 scholars, all boys, so it must have been quite large.

Does anyone know what kind of school it was?

Thanks for looking,
Barbara  :)

Well, the only major school in the area seems to have been Tadcaster Grammar School - refered to on the Genuki Tadcaster page for 1868, founded in 1558.
But I'm not sure whether it was in tadcaster itself or Stutton sum Hazlegrove, which was past of the parish.

Hi Mum,

Thanks very much for looking.  I was just curious as not much known about the early life of William Predgen, except born Hull 1847, father a master mariner I think died in a shipwreck in that year, (still looking into that) and wondering how he came to go to what looked like a private school about 65 miles from home.

Well of course - maybe this wasn't Tadcaster Grammar !

Perhaps it was one of those schools set up for the sons or orphans of certain professions?

if you scroll make sure it goes to page number 263 there is in the second paragraph starting "The living is a discharged...

It goes onto mention that the Wesleyan Methodist had a school room attached to it big enough to cater for 300 pupils.

Only thing is I cant find an address for the church building....yet.

Stutton Grove School - have just started looking for info - my g.g.g.father William Stacey was schoolmaster at Stutton Grove School c.1851 & I presume until he retired to live in Norwich.
Not much info yet but persevering.

I, too, am looking for information re Stutton Grove School.  My husband's great grandfather is listed on the 1861 census as being a 'boarder' at the school.  I can find no information about the school.   Any one got any up to date information, please?
