Hi Isobel

Don't know why I missed your wonderful offer previously!

Do you have any Porteous in your indexes?

Mine were mostly Dryfesdale, St Mungo, Dalton, Tundergarth, - but they seemed to get about a bit!  Perhaps there is a lair or two in you indexes.

Many thanks

Ceeoh

Message for mosside(John)
I have just found this site and I see you too are researching Armstrong's of Cannonbie.
I wonder if we have a connection?
My(Husband's) line is as follows  James b.1813 son of
                              John A. born 1777   m Margaret Nichol born.1781
son of William born (Harelawhole). circa 1750  m Margaret Carruthers born 1752 .they died at Priorhill (Cannonbie)
We believe William's father is   a   Michel  ?      ?m to a Mary Scott .I haven't confirmed the last entry .It is on the IGI.
The John and William  connections have been confirmed this summer as we found 2 generations on the same gravestone also a daughter Jane  and a grandson of John's  William Pott
Hope this is of help,
Bigooms.

Thanks BigOoms,
I haven't found a connection yet. My lines come through a place called Gricetail which was divided into Mosside, Priorslynn, and Hollinghurst at the end of the 18th century. But then people moved with trades etc.

There is an MI for some possible relatives of your husband listed by Gilchrist:
"Sacred to the memory of Mary Wilson spouse to Thomas Armstrong who died at Hairlawhole 22nd December 1818 aged 55 years. Also the above Thomas Armstrong who died -- July 1839 aged 88 years. Also Robert their son who died 9th April 1828 aged 25 years .."
But you might have found this already.
Good luck

Bigooms,
Your William was baptised on March 16, 1746, parents MICHAL ARMSTRANG/MARY SCOTT in Hairlawhole (Scotlands People/ OPR). The 1841 Census lists a 20 year old coal miner James at Priorshill 5. At Priorshill 3, a 70 year old shoemaker named William  and Catherine, 60, and an 11 year old agricultural labourer (!) named William. Perhaps the latter were related to your husband, but were in a different house there.

Thomas was an elder brother of your husband's ancestor, John. Michal and Mary had him baptised on 20 Dec 1751. Thomas and wife Mary Wilson had a son baptised Michal on 15 Oct 1795. This must be Michael, farmer, aged 45, listed on the 1841 Census at Hairlawhole. Perhaps also of interest, on April 6, 1746 John Armstrang and Grizal Scott in Hairlawhill had a lawful daughter baptised (?) Nicholas. (on same page of OPR as first entry above).

Hairlawhill and Hairlawhole were different places, along with nearby Harelaw. You can navigate to them at http://geo.nls.uk/roy/ where Roy's 1750's military maps are digitally accessible.  There is also a Hairlawhagg and a Hairlaw Mill.

Hector of Harelaw was an Armstrong of the 16th century who famously sheltered the Earl of Northumberland, after the failed Rising of the Northern Earls, but was said to have later betrayed him.

for info I've started photographing all the headstones in the Canonbie Church yard, I'll add Tags (surnames/dates/locations) to make them 'searchable' Got a set here on FlickR and links to 2 other sets on Google.

Fiona,

1953 is probably in the 'New Cemetery I've not yet photographed those yet. I'll see if I can find this one.

Congratulations Howard!
   What a wonderful effort.
I wonder if you photographed them before or after my Husband and I cleaned his rellies grave stone????
We were there  in July 2009.
Do you know the date of the earliest gravestone?  Before Canonbie was opened , do you know where they would have been buried, the folks from Canonbie?
