Chester Mews 1865. Completed.
« on: Saturday 15 March 08 14:36 GMT (UK) »
My GGgrandmother died at 57 Chester Mews in 1865.

On the Death Certificate the Registration District is Pancras, Sub-district The Regents Park in the County of Middlesex.

I would very much like to visit Chester Mews if it still exists, so far I have only been able to find Chester Mews or Chester Square Mews in Belgravia.

The family were not living at Chester Mews in 1861 or 71 so I am not able to locate it in that way.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Chester Mews has probably changed names over the years, there is a Chester Court Nth & Sth & a Chester Place , just off the Regents Park Rd., Pancras.

To find this in the 1871 census

RG10/202  folios 25 -36

Good luck,

Try the local archive staff for the modern day borough of Camden, they're normally very helpful: www.camden.gov.uk/local studies - a contact list at the bottom takes you to their email.  The eastern third of Regents Park comes under that borough now and the Pancras registration district generally ties up with Camden.  (The rest is in modern day Westminster).

But it may have gone - I have the local history society's book covering all the streets in that area and it gives a Chester Arms / Close / Cottage / Court / Gate / Place and Terrace - but no Mews!  Still, more reason to think this is the right area and you may at least be able to find out where it was.

I have just checked my Victorian London A-Z & find that what is now known as Chester Close, was shown as Chester Mews, running parallel to Chester Terrace.

Chester Terrace was probably road of the larger properties & Chester Mews would have been the smaller place where the carriages etc were kept at the rear of each of the larger houses.

Thank you Meliora and sharonw. This must be my lucky day.

I now know that there was definitely a Chester Mews near Regents Park. I should be able to find Chester Close.

While you were posting on this thread I had found another one through Google. On the London Board, Address on Death Cert - Kentish Town.
Anna had given a web site  for 1891 Street Index. I found the following Chester Mews.

Chester Mews North, St Peter, Pimlico, ST GEORGE HANOVER SQUARE
Chester Mews off Chester Place, St Peter, Pimlico, ST GEORGE HANOVER SQUARE
Chester Mews off Chester Street, St Peter, Pimlico, ST GEORGE HANOVER SQUARE
Chester Mews, Christ Church, Albany Street, ST PANCRAS
Chester Mews, St Philip, LAMBETH.

I have now found Chester Terrace and Albany Street so I will find Chester Close/Mews.

The reason I want to get the correct address is because my GGgrandfather was a domestic coachman, we don't know who any of his employers were. I have recently been told that Rate Books are held at the Westminster Archives and I am hoping I might find some helpful information. I would like to visit Chester Close. formally Mews , first.

Thanks again.
