Michael Mahoney, Timoleague, Cork
« on: Saturday 15 March 08 09:34 GMT (UK) »
Good morning,
I am researching my wife's family and would be grateful for any information about Michael Mahoney who we believe hails from Timoleague in County Cork.  We think his father was John and his mother Norry Connolly.
Many thanks
Graham

Difficult to give you any advice without having an idea of dates involved. What information is available depends on whether an event happened before or after civil registration, etc.

Hi aghadowey,
We believe our Michael Mahoney was born around 1858 at Timoleague (Drimoleague) and hie parents John and Norry were born around 1838

The problem is that civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages started 1864 (from 1845 for other marriages) so you do need to search for church records (if they still exist). To do so you need to know the family's religion and where they lived.
If you check LDS catalogue (www.familysearch.org) they might have microfilmed the church records which can be ordered through your local LDS library for a small fee to be viewed there.

Thank you for your help.  Unfortunately the LDS have not research the Parish Records for Timoleague.  We believe the family were Catholic.  Does this alter things at all?

LDS have microfilmed church records of various denominations but it's just a matter of luck as to finding the church you want in their records. Otherwise you'll probably have to contact the individual church for help.

Hi Graham

You may find this site of interest:  the IFHF website at http://brsgenealogy.com/ for BMD data.

The site is free to search and costs are involved to view entries.  I understand these costs are halved from 10euro to 5euro until end March.  For no cost you will be able to see if there are lisiting for Michael Mahoney and where those listing are from.

I have another site which you may also find interesting:

http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/cork/clonfert.htm

Best wishes with your research

Regards

Hi aghadowey,
You are quite right - the LDS does not appear to have transcribed Timoleague PR's.  Research in Ireland is new to me as my previous research has been in South England and I am having a little trouble discovering the catholic church at Timoleague - any suggestions?
Regards
