Hi All,

Thanks for that info Milton.

I was assuming that John Perkins jnr is John Melford Perkins (b1855) son of John Perkins (1812-1877). It would make make him Mayor when he was very young at about 22, but I was just going with it for now. There are articles from the australian newspaper archives (link above from Merlin) which show our ex mayor John Perkins jnr leaving on a trip to Europe on 5 Feb 1878. He first goes to an exhibition in Paris as a Tasmanian representative (although it appears that that decision wasn't made until after he left so he may not have known he was officially a representative) and then on to England to visit family. John Perkins (1812-1877) is already dead, so it cant be him. Progress reports of John Perkins jnr's travels are given to the council by Herbert Perkins. It would make sense that he would know about the travel progress of his brother.

This makes John Perkins (1812-1877) parentage still a mystery, but i'm surewe can work it out.

Need to have a good look at all this new info and try to match it up.

Hi all

Fletcherhist - i think you'll like this one.

From the newpaper archives link i've fround an article in 'The Mercury' on Wed 4 June 1873 showing a dinner held in rooms in Cannon Street, London. It was attended by a whole host of Tasmanians including Herbert Perkins, H Perkins (assumming Henry Alleine Perkins, Herbert's brother who was studying medicine at Edinburgh at the time - the article mentions him at Edinburgh to confirm it), also E. O. Giblin (their sister Emmely Jean Perkins had married William Robert Giblin in 1865, who was Attorney General of Tasmania at the time, later to beome Premier).

Is it during this visit that Herbert Perkins meets Emily Colbourn. If so, it means that them getting married 6 days after Emily arrives in Melbourne 3 years later not so odd.

Have tried to down load the article but it was too big so failed - my it skills are not up to those of Merlin.

Great Perks1,
I'll see what I can do. Watchorn's emporium adverts over the years must have cost a fortune!

Hi Perks 1,
I was going to advise that there is a PDF facility top left of the screen but it seems you got there first.

You're right. I could happily spend weeks going through these old issues. Have you tried the 'search' facility and read through the results in chronological order?

Hi Merlin.
Thanks for the offer but I managed to download.

Cheers
