Emily Colbourn: Born 1851 Stepney, London.

Father: William Colbourn (1816 Peckham, London -1860 Stepney, London)

Mother: Harriet Brown Heard (1826 Northam, Devon - 1864 Poplar, London)

They marry 30 Sept 1845, St Dunstans, Stepney.

Siblings:

Henry Colbourn (b 1846), William Osmund Colbourn (b1849) , Edwin Colbourn (b1850), Harriet Colbourn (b1853), Clara Heard Colbourn (b1854), John Colbourn (1856), Tobias Colbourn (b1857).

After the death of William Colbourn, Harriet remarries to:

William Goodey on 18 Aug 1862 at All Saints Church, Poplar, London.

These families all come from the same part of London, so I'm just guessing that some of them may know each other or be related, giving Emily Colbourn a reason to travel to Tasmania after the death of both her parents.

Found her arriving...by herself...on Christmas Day!

Then she was married before the end of the month...!!!...WOW...!!!


Emily Colbourn age 24 arrived 25 Dec 1876 Port Phillip Bay, from London aboard the Sobraon.

Found her brother & sister arriving together 2 years later...

Edwin Colbourn age 28 and Harriett Colbourn age 22 arrived 7 Jul 1878, Melbourne from Gravesend aboard the Kent

I wonder if Herbert had taken a voyage to England & met her?

An arranged marriage through family?

Just hard to swallow that she arrives 25th Dec & is married within 6 days!!!

Oh- forgot to say that she arrived at Victoria & their marriage WAS IN Victoria NOT Tasmania.

It seems he would have had to be there & waiting for her!

Yes it like nothing else I've heard of. As you say - they may have met before otherwise it was a real whirlwind romance!!

Just for your interest - I've just checked on Edwin and Harriet Colbourn and think that she is Edwins wife as he marries a Harriet Rose Matthews in Apr 1878. Harriet Colbourn (the sister) died in 1854 aged 1.

Yes, I saw the age for Harriet was out by a year or two but passenger lists are so often full of lies when it comes to passengers ages you just never know!

Have you found her other siblings still in England?
