DAY family heirlooms - help please!
« on: Wednesday 12 March 08 19:26 GMT (UK) »
Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here goes:
My grandfather, Lawrence Leslie DAY (known as Leslie) emigrated to NZ in 1968/69.  In December 1969 at the age of 75, he married Elsie Beatrice Simpson (nee Burn).  He died in Levin (near Wellington) in 1980.  I assume Elsie is also deceased (she was born 1905).
When he went to NZ, he took with him (as far as we know) family photos and his father's medals.  I attach a photo of my g-grandfather (also called Lawrence Day) wearing said medals. My father would love to track down anything that survives - copies of photos etc.  The medals would be fantastic, but a picture of them would do!  I know this is a long shot, but any suggestions as to how I'd go about looking for them would be much appreciated!
Thanks

Levin Newspapers of the time would ??have his next of kin in New Zealand.
Would there be a will, then his assets would have been disposed of in accordance with his will, so would tell you who may have family items.

Thanks Althea,
I did have a quick look online for a will, but I'm not familiar with NZ records (I'm in UK), so not really sure if I'm looking in the right place.

Would local newspapers of the time be available online?

Thanks
Caz

BTW apologies to all for the size of the photo - didn't expect it to be so BIG!

Hi
No the newspapers that new aren't on line the library should be contacted
http://www.library.org.nz/about-us/libraries/ and they may do it for nothing
Otherwise advertise on newsboards for a Levin Library lookup
http://www.library.org.nz/about-us/libraries/

The archives site is
http://archway.archives.govt.nz/ but again, because they are so recent may not be referenced online. Can't see anything

Could always contact lawyers in Levin as a longshot
http://www.finda.co.nz/business/ar/levin/k/?k=lawyer I see some have emails so that may be worth it,
Bye
Althea

**Forgot most obvious, contact Levin cemetery and get burial details for Elsie, may have lawyer, or relative details.

I see they are still working on database but Elsie's has some info http://www.library.org.nz/resources/cemetery/

Thank you both so much - it's never easy searching in another country, so all pointers are welcome :)
Will certainly follow these up

Hi Caz

There are a number of "DAYs" in the telephone book for Levin....

http://www.whitepages.co.nz/

even more if you widen the area and select "Manawatu" for the "Region"
