US census lookup please
« on: Wednesday 12 March 08 12:45 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I am trying to find out what became of a relative of mine who emigrated to America in 1888
DETAILS AS FOLLOWS:

CLARA JANE DIX - BORN IN 1863, WEST HARPTREE, SOMERSET, ENGLAND

LEFT LIVERPOOL ABOARD THE SHIP 'ADRIATIC', ARRIVING AT NEW YORK 8TH DECEMBER 1888.

I would love to know where she went after this, marriage?, death?did she just disappear??

I would be very grateful for any help at all in tracing her movements in the USA.
Many thanks
Angela

Hi Angela,

That will be very difficult to find. Did the manifest say where she was going in the US. If you know the place it would be perhaps a little easier.

If she went to NYC there is a marriage of

CLARA DIX  Oct 7 1893  Manhattan  Cert No.13869

That would seem to tie in with date of immigration but really just guessing.

If not NYC and she married, without knowing her married name it will be virtually impossible to find her.

Sorry to be a bit negative. However there are a lot of good searchers on here.
                                         Regards
                                                     Geoff

The grooms name was Carl Bauert so will have a look at 1900 Census under that name.

Hi Geoff
Many thanks for your reply, the info I have on Clara came from the Passenger List for the ship Adriatic in 1888. It only gave her name & age and Port of Arrival, New York. I realise I'm trying to find a needle in a haystack!
Best wishes
Angela

Hi Angela,

Had absolutely no luck with the name Bauert on 1900 Census. You could ask for a look up at NYC Archives  for marriage cert. to check parents names of Clara

Try through a volunteer at
                                        http://www.raogk.org/

However I think it is a chance in a million.

Could the groom's name be BAUER instead of Bauert?

1900 census (Manhattan, N.Y.) lists a Clara Baer 36 born Nov.1863 England wid. to US 1874 parents b.Germany with three children Sadie 17, Hattie 15, Sigmund 12.
And IGI has a Karl Gustav Bauer and Klara Gemund with children:
1. Auguste born 22 Jan.1877 N.Y.
2. Karl born 10 Mar.1878 Manhattan
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Angela,  using the same criteria  except  this time 1889  for Imm Year   (since Clara came in December, 1888 --  common for people to be "off " on that detail on the census --  hopefully your Clara did not go WAY off !)  yielded another 19 hits.

Again, if any of the names associate with anything you might know will check for more details.

So the needle could only be 42 out of millions and millions .......not so bad IF we can identify who she married ..... and IF she didn't marry twice 1889 and 1900!!!
