Yes, you'd expect a younger Susan(na) to be listed after Lewis.  What's more to the point is that the Susanna is listed as wife, and William is listed as married not widowed, so unless Grandma Susanna was in another household that night....

Kind regards

Gaie, I have checked my sources and cannot find my original data which pointed to this family.  Having checked the 1861 census I find Susan Wood nee Ashdown visiting her family which is a quite different bunch!! I kn ow my Susan(na) married Chrisopher George Wood and her age in the 1861 census matches so it looks as though I have some re-thinking to do.  Sorry if I have wasted all your time but thank you for asking the obvious question.

No, you haven't wasted anyone's time at all, you've tested out your information!  This is what this site is about.  And no-one has to look anything up for anyone, it's all voluntary.

In the 1861 where does it say your Susan Wood was born?

Do you have her marriage certificate/parish marriage record to Christopher Wood?  Is there a father named on there, and what was his occupation?  Every little helps!

Kind regards
Gaie

Hello again. You are both very kind.
I am now pursuing Susanna's mother as Ann Ashdown and have checked the 1851 census where I find that susanna is listed as Susanna Carpenter!  So another twist!  Here her birth place is given as St Mary Magdalene, Hastings.
By co-incidence an elderly uncle has just telephoned and I mentioned the quagmire I had got myself into and her remembers talk of the Ashdown family and of them coming from Kent, although he can't recall where exactly.  All grist to the mill I guess!
I am just going to explore the Sussex Marriage Index to see if I can trace the Ashdown/Carpenters.
Thanks again

Hello Gaie,
I think I have traced Susanna's mother.    :)
I believe she is Ann Wilson who was born at Bexhill in abt 1813 and married William Carpenter at Hollington on 23 August 1831.  Ann had 3 children, Henry (abt 1837), Mary (abt 1839 and Susanna (abt 1841).  So Susanna's birth name was Carpenter, although she changed it in later years.
William Carpenter died in 1843 and Ann remarried William Ashdown between 1843 and 1851. They had three more children, Alfred (abt 1851), George (abt 1855 and Edward (abt 1857).  Phew!!
I guess it is still possible that William Ashdown is the son of William and Susan Beany but I have no corroboration yet.
Sorry to go on a bit but I thought you might find some of it interesting?
Regards
Graham

Hello Graham

There's this family in the 1841:

HO107 1107 10 28 13
Shepherd Street, Hastings, Sussex
William Carpenter 30 Mariner
Ann 25
William 9
Henry 4
Mary 2
All born county

So, although the 1841 doesn't give relationships, it looks like there's another child to the ones you've already found ie William c 1832.  No Susanna, but she probably wasn't born at the time this census was taken.

Kind regards
Gaie
