Hi Ev & Valr

Just did a search for East Linton re Mathew Stewart b.1839.
Its certainly odd for this young man to be so far from Midlothian at this age.

The Stewart/McKenzie link is certainly confusing. The Mathew Mitchell is my link to the present. I have his OPR record showing Robert & Isabella [Keay] Stewart as parents. No other info.

Robert Stewart has me stumped as does his father-in-law Hugh Keay. ::)

hi tia

stewart/mckenzie and stewart/keay are two seperate families ,
they are both on the 1841 census so i think we can safely say that
stewart/mckenzie is not your family
this also means that the robert , isabella , and margaret that we found on
the 1851 census are probably not your family if margaret age 12(1851) and
margaret age 3(1841) are the same person
the mathew stewart is a possible(but hard to prove)

i wonder if something happened to robert stewart(senior) and the family broke up ?
the three older sons could have went their own way

what is the family link to australia ?

Hi Ev
My father arrived here in 1939 with his Grandmother & Uncle [skeleton in the cupboard we found out when he - my dad - died]
Our family -Stewart - has been traced back to the 1860's in Wilton Dean [Hawick] BUT Mathew Mitchell was born in Midlothian to Robert & Isabella [Keay] Stewart.

Another curiosity is that Mathew was not born till 1839 but his parents were married in 1824, this makes me think that the family which includes the boys is the correct family WHICH in turn leaves me still looking for Robert. ::)

Is 'Mathew' an unusual forename?

 ;D
Totally confused now!
I think Matthew was relatively uncommon back then - certainly this is the firts time I've come across it in Scotland around that time and if you do a search relatively few come up (compared for example to Donald or Robert etc!)
I know its a pain.. but could you possible set out all the info you are entirely sure of with sources etc.. and we can try again? It's bugging me now and I'd like to get to the bottom of it!

hi valr

matthew mitchell stewart married jane brydon 11th june 1869 wilton
roxburghshire
they had children isabella(1869) jemima(1871) matthew(1873)
they have another daughter on the 1871 census esther(1867)
on the 1871 matthew stewart is age 32 born edinburghshire
tia has obtained his parents names robert stewart & isabella keay and
found them on the 1841 census(as you have seen)
then the family seem to break up/disappear on the 1851
tia found a possible match for matthew on the 1851

now on the 1861 census i've found matthew stuart age 22 born edinburgh
living wilton roxburgh
he's listed as brother but head of household is john rodger  ???
maybe another skeleton
