Allan family, County Down
« on: Tuesday 11 March 08 22:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks
Is there any member doing research on the surname Allan , from County Down or Belfast.
My gr grandfather x4, George Allan, was born County Down, c1788. He married an Agnes ? born c1791,County Down, the children that i know of are, Sarah c1810, Agnes c1825, both down as being born in County Down. Andrew c1820 born Belfast. Theres a chance there is another sister Mary Ann c1829, but down as born in Lasswade, Midlothian, Scotland, and on another census as Belfast.  The 1st address i have for them was, at the time of Sarahs marriage too Christopher Vickers was , Finnigans Lodgings, Bulls Close, Canongate, Edinburgh, further census returns have them in the Old Pentland and, Lasswade areas of Midlothian.
George had died between the 1851 and, 1861 census as Agnes is down as a widow.
Andrew my gr grandfather x3 married Grace Reid in 1841, Lassswade, Midlothian.

Cheers Iain

Hello Iain,

You'll have to rely on Church records when searching for details about Agnes, George and their children as they were born prior to the introduction of Civil Registration in Ireland. This happened in 1864. Marriages of Non Catholic were registered from 1845 onwards.

The other items required when searching for Irish ancestors are ...

1. Denomination ... this is important as it's the first step in finding church records.

2. Parish ... step two in your search. Once you've established the denomination you need to find the churches in that particular parish as well as making enquiries about the existence of records for the period you are researching. You should be able to find these details online ... make a note of where such records are held.

3. Townland ... this can range in size from an acre to several thousand acres. In a great many cases the name of a townland referred to an identifiable feature of the landscape ... properties may or may not have had names but it's unlikely they were numbered as they may have been in towns and cities when your ancestor's were living.

Christopher
