Patrick Murphy Soldier
« on: Wednesday 12 January 05 00:51 GMT (UK) »
Patrick Murphy is listed as a Soldier on his  daughter Johanna's marriage certificate. Johanna  (born approx 1830 Cork)  married a Mr Desmond, I can't find a marriage record on BMD for the UK, they had children named called Patrick, John, Timothy and Catherine. Johanna was widowed and married a Thomas James (born 1821 Chepstow) in Pontypool 1869 together they had a daughter Johanna and son Thomas (1869+1875). Are there any records I can check for Patrick Murphy? I do not have a DOB. Can anyone relate to the above information?

Hi,

What records do you have that indicate an Irish connection?

Hi Kated

The only details I have on Patrick Murphy being a Soldier is from his daughter's second marriage certificate in 1869. The daughter Johanna was born in Cork approx 1830. I have her first marriage certificate from 1855 which took place in Pontypool, her Father then was listed as deceased in the occupation column and no other ref. to his trade.
In the Canongate census for 1841 which was taken at Edinburgh Castle a Patrick Murphy 35 years old is listed as being married and a Soldier.
I believe records are kept of Soldiers at Kew but I think you need to know their Regiment.
I know I don't have alot of information to go on.

Hi,

So Patrick was dead by 1855. I would suggest checking every UK records for for Johanna and any other siblings to find the townland or parish within Cork as you have to go to parish records for this date.

Kitzmiller gives the 19th Foot and the 28th Foot at Cork in 1830.  The only record indexed in the soldiers discharge records and the pensionnrecords (WO97 & WO121) That fits your man is:

WO 97/474/112 PATRICK MURPHY Born CLONFERACKLE, Tyrone Served in 28th Foot Regiment Discharged aged 39 1831-1847

If the 'covering dates' at the end coincide with his discharge, ie., 1847, then this would fit quite well with the age of 35 given in the 1841 census you mention.

However since you say that the birth at Cork was approximately 1830; looking at 1831 the 6th Foot 56th Foot and 69th Foot are at Cork and the following are possibilities:

WO 97/556/90 PATRICK MURPHY Born COOTE HALL, Roscommon Served in 39th Foot Regiment; 6th Foot Regiment; 13th Foot Regiment; 47th Foot Regiment Discharged aged 37 1825-1844

WO 97/607/121 PATRICK MURPHY Born KILENMACK, Wexford Served in 46th Foot Regiment; 56th Foot Regiment; 89th Foot Regiment; 11th Foot Regiment Discharged aged 38 1829-1847

Maybe one of these will ring a bell.  You can look through the rest at:
