The last message looks very good. It matches with the other census entries.

The 1877 marriage and 1881 censuses seem to be the same person  íe: George Smith/Cains. The surname varied over the years

To confirm the link better, my Thomas Caines born 1890 worked on the railway at Basingstoke.
At that time the sons followed their fathers working in the same trade.

To be honest, I didn´t know it varied in this case.

But it is NOT the first time that I have have found another name which fitted with what I was searching for.

When the enumerator wrote what he thought he heard and not what the person said..... (you want to hear my accent!!)

Any further information referring to Thomas Caines would be welcome.

Thomas lived in Woking, Surrey and was a Railway Engine Greaser in 1911.
I know he died in 1929 at or near Basingstoke.

Hi Muffin,
You actually know more about Thomas than I do. None of my remaining family knew anything other than the fact that he worked on the railway & was probably killed in the course of his work. I have traced his family back to 1733, mainly just names really. Would this be any help to you or do you already have that info?

I do not have much about Thomas family other than he was my mother's sisters first husband and they had three children.
