Just a point of interest.....

I grew up in the east end of London (Walthamstow). Up until the 1950, or there abouts, there were many, many Jewish families trading in the markets.

Indeed, one of the most famous markets, Petticoat Lane, the main trading day was Sunday as the Jews didn't work on Saturdays. It was the same in Walthamstow market, in that the shops and stalls run by orthodox Jews were not open on Saturdays. The Jewish bakers were close on Saturday but did a roaring trade on Sundays (fresh bread  ;D).

I also had a good knowledge of the fruit & veg wholesale market of Spitalfields and the wholesale meat market of Smithfield where kosher meat was always kept separate and overseen by rabbis to ensure it was not contaminated by contact with non-kosher products.

At the same time, the non-orthodox Jews did trade on Saturdays for as long as I can remember  ;D ;D ;D

Cathayb.

No I dont  ;D  and I only have one picture of my grandfather so it very hard to tell.

I am definintely no haggler, I wont even  visit countries that do, how sad is that  :o

I do spend quite freely but I do like to get value for money, so I suppose I am half and half  ;D

My grandfather and mother were quite wealthy when they lived in Paris, but grandfather got involved with the commies in the war and had to flee to Romania.   When they came back to England they were as poor as church mice.

A pocket  edition of my FH on my mothers side  ;D

Not any new leads really but they might come to light with the look ups I now need to do at the Met Archives, fingers crossed.

I have really learnt a lot , much more than I ever thought possible  :D

I feel as though I am speaking directly to you , sitting there so relaxed with your cuppa  ;)
