I never have any luck with the Nat Archives site, its get me totally confused  but that quite easy.

It's great ... glad you have figured it out!  sometimes I use just surmanes and the area ...eg; with the Phillips family ...I would put in ...

* Phillips, Spitalfields
* Phillips, Whitechapel
* Phillips , Middlesex
or
*Phillips , dealer, London
