Stafford Cemetery which one? (Now complete)
« on: Sunday 09 March 08 22:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone!

I came across my g g grandparents George and Ann Merricks on wishful thinking, they say they are buried at Stafford Cemetery, but which one?
George died in 1913 and Ann in 1901, a family member in England phoned the Stafford council for any idea on which cemetery, but no one could give a answer.
I would like to know if it is St Mary's or St Chad.
Is there anyone living in Stafford who could find out for us, or even take a photo?
Thanks
Suzy W :D

Thanks to Alf, a number of photos have been taken of the grave site in Tixall Road  ;)

Hi SuzyW,

There are two cemeteries in the Stafford area, one at Tixall Road and one on the Eccleshall Road in Stafford.

St. Mary's Church does have a churchyard but I am not sure if your family would be buried there as it has been closed for a long time now.  St. Chads is a little Norman church in the middle of the town and very little burial space - I doubt if there have been any burials etc there for your time period.

This is the e-mail address for the bereavement services at Stafford Borough Council - hopefully they will be able to help you.  I think this contact will only cover the burials in the cemeteries not the churchyards.

Suzy W - I've just looked at the entry (A45 under Stafford cemetery) - I agree it is confusing, partly owing to the comments near the end of the list. As the section that included the Merricks was compiled by Alf Beard, you could always send him a PM on here (he posts as Alf) - I hope he would be able to be more exact on the particular cemetery for you.

Hi, i live in Stafford, not far from the Tixall Road Cemetery. I would be happy to go and find the grave and take a photo for you if you still need it.

Hello,

I don't like to contradict anyone, but the Tixall Rd cemetery and crematorium date from around the sixties, so I am not sure that the above information is correct.

I think you are right there. The staff at the Tixall Road Crem have all the details on hand for all the burials in Stafford though. We have used them many times and they actually met us at Eccleshall Road once and showed us where a family grave was. I will go and see them and see what they say.
