George William Warner

HELP PLEASE !!!!!

My husbands great grandfather was a George William Warner.  This is all that we know of him.  He married Florence Hall 9th July 1876 at the Parish Church, Preston, Brighton, Sussex.  He was a bachelor aged 29 years.  He was a Sergeant in the Scots Greys, 2nd Dragoons; residing at Preston on his marriage certificate and his father was George Warner a Station Master.  ?  railway of military ?  The witnesses were John Sinclair and Fanny Packham.

George and Florence had a daughter Florence Elizabeth born 5th January 1877 at 9 Cambridge Place, Leeds.  George was still a Sergeant in the Scots Greys.

George joined the Scots Greys in 1865.  His Reg. No. 816.  He served for 12 years and 8 days.  He was discharged 28th July 1877.  His character was very good and he had 3 medals.

George had died by the time his 2nd daughter was born, Georgina Leonora was born 3rd August 1879 at 11 Dinapore Street, Brighton.

George died of  Pyemia on 6th February 1879 aged 31 years, at 11 Dinapore Street, Brighton, Sussex.  George Phillip Yule, Brother-in-Law was present at the death, of Hadogan Street (or 9 Cadogan) Chelsea, London.

Any ideas, please on on how to find George's date and place of birth.  Would these details have been recorded when he joined up, along with the name and address of the next of kin.  We found his discharge records at Kew, but unfortunately did not have time to look futher.

We would be grateful for any advice.

Hi epc

This may be a red herring, but in 1871 there is a Biddulph Lee Warner b. France, 26, British Subject, Deputy Commissioner of A.S. Corps, ranked Captain, with wife and family at Aldershot District Army Service Corps barracks, with brother George 24 b. Scotland - no occupation listed for George, but wondering about the Scots Greys connection as G born Scotland.

The two brothers in 1861 are at what looks like a private school with abt 20 pupils in St. Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands. This time Lee stated b. Switzerland, George b. France, so no parents shown, and I haven't found them yet in 1851

Full details if you want them, may not be your George of course
Someone on the Armed Forces board may be able to help with his service record http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,300.0.html

Would you like to post a pic of the bit you're not sure of on of his marriage cert showing father George's occupation - maybe something military too?

Hi Barbara

George's father occupation on his marriage certificate was just down as "station master".  It is me wondering whether that refers to railway, military or some other sort of station master.

Thanks for your interest.  I have put this branch of research on hold since May 2003.  I had already found Biddolph Lee Warner with George on the 1901, 1891, 1881, 1871  (Alice L Newman, possibly his sister with mother Ann Warner)  1871 (Biddolph with wife and George)  1861 Lee Warner and George at school in Jersey,  also on the next page there is an Alice Warner aged 11, born France , Brit. Sub. which could be their sister.  1861 R.G. 9/1411 also shows, I think, but hard to read Biddolph Warner age 48 living Torquay, BUT also 1861 R.G. 9/520 George B Lee Warner aged 48 years, born Boxwell, Gloucestershire - I think, but can't read occupation.  This last one could be our George's father.

I haven't looked on the 1851 and 1841, I will now do so.  I wish that I could read the occupation of George age 48 on R.G.9/520.  Can you?

Thank you so much for showing so much interest - keep it up!!

Wish you'd said that you had all that census info tho, would have saved a bit of time!

George B. Lee's occupation ~ Vicar of St. Mary Bredin Camberwell
bit different from Station Master!

Apologies to all who have read about George William Warner.  I have well and truly learnt my lesson.  In future I will put every scrap of information on that I have.

Anyway enough of that. if anyone out there can help me find the birth and parentage of George - I would be grateful.  I think the answer might be in the 2nd Dragoons, Scots Greys records, but where do I search. Does it mean another visit to Kew, and when I get there where do I search?

Hi epc,

You did put a lot of information, no apologies necessary, just didn't mention the census!  Too much information can be confusing too  :)

As I said, perhaps someone on the armed forces board can help with his service record.

As you asked by p.m.,  the 1861 census for Biddulph Warner reads,
Biddulph Warner Esq, head, mar, 48, No Proffession Magistrate for the Co. Meath, Ireland , born M------- Ireland (but sorry don't know the town)

I've posted that bit of the image on the common room board to see if anyone recognises the town http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,291201.0.html

How was George Phillip Yule 'brother in law'?  It appears he married Susan Simms Palling in 1873.

Normally discharge records should give a place of birth. Otherwise, you might have luck looking at the Description books in WO 25, and at pension records in WO 116 and 117. (Another visit to Kew, I'm afraid).

There is not really any one document at that time that could be considered a "service record" - the discharge papers come closest. However, both description books and the pension records should give a place of birth.

George William Warner married Florence Hall, she was the daughter of Richard Thomasson Hall who married Mary Ann Yule (widow) who must have had a son before she married Richard.  See 1861 census R.G.9/135 Islington.  George Phillip Yule was born Huntingdon, Cambridge, 1850.

Thank you for the advice on a trip to Kew!

As mentioned before, there was a witness at the marriage of George William Warner and Florence Hall - John Sinclair.  I have found two as follows:-
1851 census Kent, Canterbury, St Mary Northgate Barracks. H.O. 107/1624.
John Sinclair aged 4, born Longford, (possibly Ireland), whose father was a Sergeant in the 2nd Dragoons!
1881 census Acton, Middlesex R.G.11/1353.
John Sinclair, widower, age 34, Ry Engine Driver, born, France (Brit Sub)

The puzzle is, was George's father a Station Master in the Army or the Railways?  Also where was his son George born?
Was there such a post as Station Master in the Army?  Armed forces page I think!

Thanks for everyone's help and advice,  keep thinking!

Hello

I don't know about records for the 2nd Dragoons but at Kew I found an Attestation Paper for my ancestor who was in the Royal Marines.  Information included his birth date and place of birth, next of kin, and several very useful addresses; also included was a physical description. This was in a different file from other paperwork.
