Garrigill gravestones

Hello Derekc. Yes I have done Alston (and they are in a worse condition than Garrigill) there are no Clementson gravestones that are readable.
I have also done most of the graveyards in Weardale and out of the 10,000 or so, there is only one Clemenston and that is for a   Rev Clementson  at Crook, Co Durham

   I notice a post re Bramwells in your replies. Only one gravestone.

Can you tell me if there is another cemetery in Garrigill?

Bramwells have been in Garrigill for a very long time. A lot died there. Must be more than one headstone.

Hello Graeme. Garrigill's only a small graveyard and as you will see by looking at my first post it is in a poor state.
Undoubtedly over the years there have been many deaths in and around Garrigill but  only 97 gravestones  are left standing.
I think a viewing of the Parish records would be your best bet
There could have been burials at Alston or Nenthead but I think other listers of this site may be more qualified to advise on this.

Thank you. By any chance, have you been to the Redwing Chapel and had a look at the stones there?

Also, would you have a url for the Parish records re burials? All I can seem to find are marriages.

 Hello Graeme. Sorry I have not been to the Redwing Chapel and I do not have the URL for the records of burials.
I have thousands of Monumental Inscriptions but they are mainly for Wear Valley in Durham County.

Hi Iam interested in the Carr and Archer gravestones. I have an ancestor Jonathan Carr born in 1815 who was the son of Anne Archer in the 1851 census but whose surname was Carr---named Jonathan Carr Archer -----he went on to be known as Jonathan Carr and lived in Bunkers Hill Garrigill sometimes referred to as Bunkeshill. I am trying yo trace his father and also the maiden name of Mary Archer his mother. I am wondering if she was married to a Carr then subsequently to an Archer or had Jonathan out of wedlock and was an Ann Carr originally.

Any information on Carrs or Archers from the gravestones would be welcome.

Hello Chrisly. Here are two gravestone inscriptions that must be yours. Don't know if they help but here goes:-

In memory of Thomas Archer of Garrigill, born April 7th 1826, died January 22nd 1899.
And of Isabella his wife, born October 19th 1830, died October 25th 1905.
And of John their son, born February 25th 1849, died September 2nd 1909
And of Jason their son, born April 23rd 1851, died May 8th 1851.
And of Thomas their son, born April 13th 1852, died March 25th 1874.
And of Hannah their daughter, born November 10th 1854, died February 25th 1861.
And of Mary their daughter, born April 23rd 1857, died July 3rd 1878.
And of Jason their son, born October 7th 1859, died March 10th 1866.
And of William their son, born January 30 1961, died December 10th 1863.

In memory of Jonathon Carr of Bunker Hill, Garrigill, who died August 25th 1890 aged 76 years.
Also Sarah his widow, who died at Bunker Hill, Garrigill May 31st 1919 aged 88 years.
Also Mary his daughter, who died April 20th 1877 aged 21 years.
Also of John Joseph his son, who died December 7th 1884 aged 16 years.
Also of Jane Ann his daughter, who died January 27th 1865 aged 1 years.

Thanks Adam for your help. Jonathan is certainly mine. I knew of him and Sarah being one set of   great great grandparents and I knew he had several children but did not know of the existence of the two girls on the gravestone. I don't think the Archers are ours though as it was this Jonathan's mother who was known as Mary Archer and the one mentioned is too young. Mary Archer must have been born about 1781 as she was 70 in the 1851census and then no trace.

Are there more Archer gravestones in Garrigill  or Alston that would fit 1850 to 1880 with a Mary aged 70 or more?
