Help with WW1 Service Records

My great grandfather Herbert J H Groves b. 1890 served in the Royal Army Medical Corp during World War I. His regiment no. 47244 SJT HJH Groves (RAMC) appears on the medals I have and I have found the medal index cards online.

I'm not sure how I may go about finding out more about his time in the army and where he may have served.

Are there any dates on his Medal index card?? have just checked service records on Ancestry online but no joy :(

The MIC may hold clues if you download and post it on the forum.

Hi Matthew

A visit to The National Archives at Kew might turn up something for you about your great grandfather. Or, you can wait to see if they eventually come online.

Some of the Service Records are appearing on Ancestry, but I don't think the work is completed yet.

However, 60% of the service records were destroyed in the German bombings of WW2, so there is no guarantee that his records have survived.

If you do plan to visit, perhaps best to wait until the building work disruption is over with, supposedly by late spring.

Hi Matthew

Firstly, welcome to the Armed Forces forum.  :)

Try scanning the image into your computer and save as a jpeg.  It will probably go into your Pictures.  Then if it needs 'cropped' do that and 'Save as ..... (name it). Once happy with the MIC:

Start your post on the forum as normal, then click on the blue words (underneath the post window).

Attach a photograph or image (and other options)

You now click on the option to 'Browse' your computer.  Go to where the MIC is on your computer, Select it, then choose 'Save' and its details should appear in the line, waiting for you to post it.  Then click on 'Post' and voila, it should hopefully appear on here.  ;D  8)
