Jones of Millom
« on: Thursday 06 March 08 21:04 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me with any info on this family please.

William Jones b. Millom 1770 m. Hannah Towers.

I have traced my line back as far as William.  His son Robert b. 1804 Millom  m. Hannah Braithwaite.  Robert's son John b. 1841 Millom m. Elizabeth Dickinson of Suberthwaite, Lancs.  John is my great granfather.

Any help much appreciated.  :)

Yes,
I too am descended from William and Hannah, through their eldest daughter Betty Jones, who's child out of wedlock at the age of 17, Nancy, married Thomas Woodburn, my paternal GGGGF.

My theory is Hannah's parents were Thomas Towers (b.1750 from the parish of Thwaites) and Ann Myers. Thomas's father was Robert, though I haven't done too much delving into this line, this is as far as I have got.

I'm not sure where William Jone's sprung from. If you have made any more progress than this, then I'd love to know. Also, I am keen to know more about your connection to the Braithwaite clan, as Matthew Woodburn (Thomas Woodburn's father) married an Ann Braithwaite, in 1811 (Millom)

Rob.

Hi Rob

Thank you so much for replying... nice to find someone also descended from the Jones family.  Haven't found too many from that direct line as yet :)

I've been researching my tree since January and have 2500 individuals already! And adding more daily.

Now, I searched for Nancy Jones on the IGI and found her and yes indeed her mother was Elizabeth Jones eldest sister of Robert.  So, I've put her into my tree along with the nine children I found for her and Thomas on the Family Search.

Please tell me more about how your line comes down from them.  Are you living in the Millom area?  I live in Carlisle.

Nancy then is my 1st cousin 3 times removed so what is our relationship to one another I wonder?

I have two possibilities for spouse of Thomas Towers.. either Anne Myers or Elizabeth Jackson.  One Thomas Towers born 1750 and one 1751 with different spouses but in Millom area.

Now my Gr Gr Grandmother Hannah Braithwaite was one of the Braithwaite's of Eskdale, her parents being Legion Braithwaite and Frances Hartley.  They were both from long established families of Eskdale.  Ann Braithwaite is quite possibly related in some way.

I noticed there were several other Woodburn families in the same area at the time Thomas and Nancy were having their children so I think they are more than likely Thomas's brothers?

I haven't found out any more as yet about William Jones or where he came from but like you I am still searching.

I have my tree posted on MyHeritage and would be happy to invite you to view it there if you let me have your email address.

Hope we can keep in touch,
very best wishes...
Barbara

Hi Barbara,
My family have been based in London for a few generations now, but my paternal grandfather was born in Millom. My grandfather was in the navy and travelled around a bit before settling down with a London girl!

Nancy is my G G G Grandmother. My by calculations, that makes us 4th cousins, twice removed.

There are a lot of Woodburns in Millom, most of which are descended from Matthew Woodburn & Ann Braithwaite. I have reached a dead-end with these two. Interestingly, my middle name is still Woodburn, and my youngest daughter is called Nancy (named before I did any of the research!)

I'm pretty sure that our Thomas Towers would have married Anne Myers - though I can't remember why I discounted Elizabeth. I'll have to go back and re-work it, though I could have been wrong in the first place.

My email is rparkATclara.co.uk   Moderator comment Email amended to avoid spammers picking it up.  Bit late sorry!
All the best,
Rob.

Sorry to butt in a bit belatedly on this topic.  I have a marriage between a Joseph Hartley and an Ann Braithwaite of Blackbeck who was born c 1803

I can't place them in the context of their own families at the moment and wonder if any of you can shed any light?  My principal interest is Hartley but I do like to fill out the picture!
