South Leith OPR ?..HOSACK
« on: Wednesday 05 March 08 17:46 GMT (UK) »
Hello All
I am looking for Alexander Hosack.  Scotlands people OPR bapt registers of South Leith  states Indewller in Leith and spouse Janet Couper for all his children.
John 1748
Alex & James 1749
Margaret 1751
William 1753
Janet 1757
Alexander 1761
I cannot find a marriage for Alexander and Janet.  I have however found a Alexander Hosack bap 1688 to William Hosack and Janet Hay In South Leith
but that would make him 73 at the birth of his youngest son Is that possible?
The other alternative is that they moved into the area after marriage and before the birth of their first child. Is there other records for that time frame that can be consulted? Why would occupations be given for most of the other couples on the page and a few list indeweller? Ive checked out some of the witnesses Finlayson ,McTagget, Lamb to get a possible age range for the couple. These men married  1727 - 1735 with possible births around 1700 1715
Could anyone advise me of what and where next..  any help at all would be be sooo greatfully apreciated - Thank you

Lorraine Nottingham

Cant see a marriage record but there were 3 Alexanders born to them

There are a few christening records for an Alexander Hos(s)ack between 1714 and 1734 mainly in the Nairn and Moray areas

Hello yes I looked at them but there is no way , i can think of to place any of them   in Leith. Would there be any taxes, polls etc around the first half of the 1700s?

This was a time of the Jacobites and great unrest in Scotland.
