Cathay, I was wondering about the later names used by Robert & Sarah Hughes - Fiance & Vashti, is this an indication of the family or is it from family associations by brothers or sisters of one of them?

I think that Robert & Sarah Hughes had another son Frederick! born 1847 at Honiton, he can be found in the 1891 & 1901 census at Honiton, there is also a mention of him in the Wedding report in 1895 of the marriage at Tiverton of Mary Ann Redmond to John Small, Susan Hughes is mentioned as Frederick's sister in law, I think she is the first wife of Noah Hughes.

There is also possibly another brother William Hughes, in 1901 he is with his son at Poole, in 1871 at Kilmington, Devon

Hi John

welcome ... hope you have fun here! :D

I have been scrolling through the 1851 census this morning, looking for them ..I concentrated on Somerset as it seems they were there for Sarah's ( b c 1860) birth.

will have a look for Frederick.

Hi John

Frederick Hughes (hawker) can also be found on the 1881 ... He now says that he is b c 1849, Chard Somerset. He is in Tiverton with his wife Mary 25, son Burty 10months and step son William Fouracres 4. They are all born in Tiverton.

will look further

Hello Deb,

I am in and out of the hunt as I spend a fair amount of time on research, but had a look at this first thing this morning on the census, the search I used was Hughes born Honiton, and a third of all names I came up with I recognized as being connected to Robert & Sarah.

I did spot  a Sarah Jones birth registration around the right time to be Robert & Sarah's daughter.

I have always been lead to believe that Sarah was nee Davis, but have not seen any proof! I thought if we could just find one registered birth we may get an answer to this.

Also there are 3 possible GRO registered death's between 1891 & 1901 for both Sarah & Robert (Somerset & Devon as the area)
