Mcleans of Whitby
« on: Monday 03 March 08 12:22 GMT (UK) »
I am researching my family tree and have established that the Mclean family have lived in Sandsend since the late 1700's. I have a reasonable amount of history of the Mcleans Sandsend as well as research of the Mclean Clan of Scotland.
Having recently come across a newspaper article I am now trying to link these Mcleans to Scotland. Information in the article says that a Robert Alexander Mclean came to live in Whitby in 1754-55 after serving on board a Whitby Whaling Ship. He apparently boarded this ship in Dingwall, Scotland a few years earlier after fleeing the battle of Culloden and making his way to Dingwall. He became a member of the crew and on return to Whitby decided to make it his home.

I would be most grateful for any information, advice, links,  to help me verify this story.

Hi Searcher 20,
I am searching for my family and have discovered McLeans in Loftus. Do you think your McLeans in Whitby are related to the ones in Loftus. I have got back to a Kenneth McLean born in 1750s. my great great great grandfather. Don't know where he was born yet but was married in Loftus in 1787 to a Jane Wilkinson. He was working in the alum mines I think.
Thanks,
Woodvillecaz.

I have just looked on Familysearch.org and that marriage is shown as at Lofthouse not Loftus. just bear in mind that there is a Lofthouse near Wakefield and one near Harrogate.

Or do we have a transcription error here? Lofthouse is VERY similar to Loftus!

Hi The Mc,

Thanks for your reply. I think it is Loftus because on the Communigate website for Loftus there is an Alexander McLean who was a clerk at the alum mine and he is mentioned as living there. He had a son called Donald and that is my great grandfather and he aslo worked at the alum mine. Alexander's father was Kenneth who was married in Lofthouse/Loftus so I think it is the one spelled Loftus today. Are the other two places you mentioned in North Riding also?

thanks again,

Woodvillecaz.

The one at Wakefield is West Riding whilst the one near Harrogate is North Riding.

I do believe you are right about it being Loftus as there is the Boulby potash mine close by which I presume was the Alum mine in years past......

Hi The Mc,

I think it was called Lofthouse until the railway came and they changed the name to Loftus to distinguish it from the other ones. I was very confused at first until I did some research.

Thanks for your help,

Woodvillecaz

Hello,
I see you haven't logged on here for a while, so I hope you get this message.
I am looking for a Keith McLean who was born in Whitby, Yorkshire around the 1940-45.
I think he had a sister called Wendy.
If this rings a bell, please contact me, *
Thanks so much,
Tom

Dear Thomaso,

I am very sorry that I am unable to help you in this as I have not researched the Whitby McLeans as I am not sure we are related to them. There are other people who have, so maybe look at other posts or put a new post up and see who replies. It is amazing how much help you can get.
Hope you find your relatives,

Woodvillecaz

Hello all, I am the great great great great great great great grandson of Robert Alexander Mclean of Whitby. I have just been past a large family tree dating back to him. It seems most of the family have moved in a north westerly direction to Teesside since the 1750s. Please get in touch as I would like to add more to the tree.
