Christina IRELAND & Alfred PRATLEY and the SCARROTT family
« on: Monday 03 March 08 08:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to discover the fate of a family of 3, who may have had links to travelling and showground families
1 Alfred Pratley b 1872 (parents Margaret Arnold or Harnell from Pontesbury and Richard Pratley from Leafield )
2 Christina Ireland (b 1868 Ashton Under Lyne) married Alfred Pratley in1896 in Bedwelty Monmouthshire
3 Edwin Pratley b1893 in Brynmard Monmouthshire

Alfred was a hawker of earthenware

There are links to the Scarrott family -Alfred's grandparents were Keziah Scarrott & Richard Pratlley and his great aunt Sarah Pratley married John Scarrott.
I think the Scarrotts had a travelling boxing booth . Does anyone know if albert/Christina/\Edwin traveled with this

Alfred died in 1948 in Newport, Christina in Worcester in 1914.

But what happened to Edwin ????

My links with the family are via my ggrandmother Sarah Jane Parkes who lived with & had 4 children out of wedlock by Alfred's father

Hi Warwickshirelass :)

I don't know how relevant this is

Ed Pratley age 21 Occupation Draper
Departed from Liverpool on the Suevic 1912
Destination Sydney Australia.

There are two other Edwin Prately's who emigrated but their ages do not fit with your query

Hi Colleena
Thanks for your reply, All information gratefully received!!I did wonder if he had emigrated.

Is there anyway I  can find anymore information on the
Ed Pratley who was on the Suevic?
Would his place of birth be noted anywhere, or if he was alone or with someone else?

Would there be any aussie records of him and if so how do I set  about accessing them?

Sorry if this posting is not now on the right board I will also post on it on the Emigrants board.

Many thanks for your help

Greetings Warwickshirelass!

I have just come across your posting on Rootschat which mentioned Richard Pratley and
Sarah Jane Parkes.  Unfortunately I cannot help you with information about Alfred Pratley as I did not know of his existence until I read your letter, but I do have quite a bit of information about Richard Pratley and Sarah Jane Parkes.

Like you, my interest is in Sarah Jane Parkes, who, after the death of Richard Pratley, married John Winkle who was a nephew of my gr. grandmother, which, I guess, makes him my great uncle!  As with Richard Pratley, John Winkle also died at quite a young age, and it was this that sparked my curiosity and made me follow the family through.

Richard Pratley, was, like Alfred, a dealer in earthenware, but unlike Alfred, did not continue to hawk his wares, instead, he became a china shop owner which, from what I can gather, still exists today.  In earlier census records he was a hawker as were Margaret his wife, her parents and her grandparents.  By the way, her name was HARNOLD, not Harnall or Arnold.

I have never been able to locate a death registration for Richard's wife Margaret.....she just seemed to disappear off the face of the earth.  Did you by any chance have more luck than me and find it?

If you would like to contact me at:

I will happily send you all the details that I know.  I have found the story quite interesting.
Cheers, Diana

Someone just switched the light on!  You have to be my dear old friend Frances whom I have been trying to contact for so long now!  It wasn't until I went searching for Alfred and consequently found him with his mother Margaret whom I had not been able to find, that I went back to your letter and when I noticed your other names of interest it suddenly fell into place who you were!

Please write back as I really want to get back in touch with you!  Love Diana
