Leonard/Aitken Marriage
« on: Sunday 02 March 08 22:22 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information on the marriage of Thomas Leonard and Mary Aitken.  I have no details on Thomas as to where he came from.  They were married in St. Bedes in Jarrow on 19th May 1917.
Many Thanks

You could get the marriage certificate for the couple.  That would give his age and father's name and occupation.  Then try to find him in the 1901 census.  I am assuming that he was over 17 when he married.  The 1901 census would give you some information on his birth, family members, etc.  The same would go for the bride.

There is a 13 year old Thomas Leonard born and living in Jarrow in 1901.

You are welcome to this entry but it would be best to verify the father with that cert, really

Thanks for those details.  Can I be a further pain and ask what website I would apply for the certificate.  I hold the church's version of it which has no details except the date of marriage.  Thanks again for that help.

You can order it from one of two places
1) the General Register Office, http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ quoting the reference number that Janis gave you (2nd quarter of 1917, South Shields 10a 1315)
or
2) Direct from South Tyneside Register Office http://tinyurl.com/yscun9 select 'marriages' then fill in a name and the year on the search screen, and you will get the marriage details together with an 'order' button - just cary on from there.
