« on: Saturday 01 March 08 12:36 GMT (UK) »
I have an ancestor who in 1891 was a schoolmaster at 'St Ronda's' School for Boys' in Downsview Road, Heene, Worthing.

Now I've Googled for ages and have been unable to find anything about this school. Can anyone help in finding some info and better still an old photograph please????
thanks so much

Tony, it might be worth contacting the Worthing Museum.  At the very least they might be able to put you in touch with someone who can help.

This School site was used until about 1960/70.
Last used by (I think ) Seaford College beforte this school moved to the South of Petworth.

Whatever the school was there pre-war I do not remember but they had very fine fireworks on Nov 5th!!

I hope Worthing Museum was able to help you. Perhaps the Sussex County archive might help.

Hi I am new to Rootschat so bear with me!! I have just read your post and wonder if the school you are referring to could be St Ronan's school. This was founded in Worthing in 1883 and moved to Kent.

Hope this may help.

Thanks Sussexlass and welcome to Rootschat. You'll find it packed full of knowledgeable and very helpful folk.

I got 'St Rondas' from a census transcription. The chap I am researching was the Head; a 'clergyman schoolmaster' one of whose sons became a Bishop in Australia.
Another helpful source has suggested the school may have moved as a result of invasion fears in 1941. I wonder where in Kent the school moved to?? 'Out the frying pan' springs to mind. Thank goodness it never happened

Good start from their website http://www.saintronans.co.uk/prospectus.htm

"The School
Saint Ronan’s is a co-educational Day and Boarding School for boys and girls from 2½ to 13 years. It was founded in 1883 in Worthing and moved to its present site, Tongswood House, in 1946."

Congratulations, Laurence on your website.  I've taken the liberty & posted the link to the site on the Sussex Resource page, so I hope those who have research in Worthing will take full advantage of it,
