Wade in parish registers
« on: Friday 29 February 08 17:58 GMT (UK) »
Hello all in Essex.
I am after lots of bits of information - dates and places mainly. I have found as much as I can from BDM, census returns & I.G.I. so now need checks in parish registers.
Starting with William Wade born c.1805 (which is why his middle name sometimes appears as Nelson) at Grays, married date & place unknown to Lucy born c. 1805 at Orsett.
They had 10 children at regular short intervals, so I think I have them all, unless there are any before or after the following list.
John(athan) born c.1831 at Chadwell or West Tilbury (various censuses)
died unmarried in 1877 in Orsett district
Stephen born c.1833 Chadwell or Tilbury or South Ockendon
married Susan(nah) Smith 1853 in Orsett district
                             died 1894 in Orsett district
Jane born c.1835 South Ockendon -
does not appear after 1841 census so perhaps died young
         Charlotte born c. 1835 South Ockendon -
does not appear after 1841 census so perhaps died young
George Golden Radley born c.1836 at Chadwell or Tilbury
married Elizabeth Sarah Wilson in 1860 Orsett district
died 1902 Orsett district (bur. at West Thurrock?)
Alfred born c.1837 West Tilbury -
does not appear after 1851 census so perhaps died
Elizabeth Ellen born & died 1839 at South Ockendon
Sarah born 1840 at South Ockendon
married George Smith 1858 Orsett district
                                died between 1871 & 1881
Lucy born c. 1843 at South Ockendon
married Thomas Smith 1861 Orsett district
                                 died 1899 Orsett district
Eliza born 1845 South Ockendon - died 1848 Orsett district

Thanks for looking. If anyone can fill out any full dates & places at all I am very grateful. Does anyone know if any monumental inscriptions have been transcribed?
I know I am asking a great deal , so many thanks for bearing with me.
                                             Regards,
                                                       Scobie

Thank you so much, Suffolk Sue.
I must admit that Jane & Charlotte Wade are the two members of the family about which I have some doubts. They were included in another person's tree, but I have been unable to find any reference to them - perhaps they were cousins. However, I decided to include them at this stage (a) because they fit in so neatly between Stephen & George Wade & (b) because more information on them (eg baptisms) could hopefully confirm or eliminate them.
The burial about Jane that you have given fits in well with the information I have as regards age & area (also it does not appear in the BDM).
I do appreciate any help I receive, & hopefully there will be more information forthcoming.
                   Best regards,
                                 Scobie

Hi Scobie, I am searching the Radley's from Orsett and can possibly help you. The Lucy bc1805 is I believe Lucy Radley b1803 the parents are John Radley b1769 at Orsett and Lucy Radley b1780. If this is the same Lucy then I cannot see why they would name a child George Golden Radley in 1836,the family is very mixed so who knows ! Do you have documented proof that he was her son ? I would like to know so that I can enter it in my records.
Incidentally another Wade, John was in partnership in 1821 with Mary Radley as a blacksmith in Ilford, there might be another lead to follow up.Regards Chris

Hello Chris.
Thanks for your reply. I can confirm that George Golden Radley Wade was the son of William and Lucy Wade, although he does not use the 'George' part of his name for some reason (I found that confusing to begin with). Golden Wade appears as a son in William and Lucy Wade's family in the 1841 and 1851 census, and appears in the 1871 census, a married man by then, as Golden Radley Wade. Your Lucy Radley has to be the lady that I am looking for - the 'Radley' part is too much of a coincidence to ignore.
George Golden Radley Wade married Elizabeth Sarah Wilson in 1860 and among their eight known children was George Radley Wade born 1864 at North Ockendon.
I also have William Wade (b 1805) as buried 08/05/1858 at South Weald, Essex, but that needs to be confirmed.
As for the John Wade in partnership with Mary Radley, this is completely new to me, and something to be looked for in the future.  At the present time, I have no information on William Wade's (b 1805) siblings and parents at all.
As you are the man on the spot, as it were, I would appreciate any information and dates regarding Lucy Radley, her immediate family and her antecedents, if you can.
Again, many thanks for the information that you have supplied.
                                                      Regards,
                                                             Scobie

Hi Scobie,  I can understand now, its obvious when you add the Wade surname, I was reading your original posting and just saw the name Radley and assumed it was the surname.
The info I can give at present is as follows:
John Radley b1780, d 1841 Orsett (although I have been told by another source 1846)
In 1841 he was an agric.labourer in Orsett.
Married to Lucy b1780,d1842.

Children were:
1. Lucy b1803 Orsett
marr.  to your William Wade (see posting).
2. William Robert b1813 Orsett,d1880 Orsett
marr. to Mary b1816 Orsett
1841 census,an agric.lab at Orsett ,2 children Robert b1837,William b1839
1871 census,an agric.lab at Orsett, 2 more children Henry b1858, Elizabeth b1855.
There are other children but this is part of ongoing research, I have the details but they need claryfying. This all leads onto my self in the chain.

Prior to John b1769 I have 3 possible connections from Orsett/Brentwood areas but they are proving hard to make the right link, I shall be having a look at the parish records at ERO soon and may find something,I will post anything I find out.Regards Chris

Hello again, Chris.
In the light of the information you supplied, I have tried to find a bit more on the internet. What follows you may already have, but I pass it on in case.
First, I checked the I.G.I. and found the following children of John and Lucy Radley baptised at Orsett.
          John Radley bap. 25/12/1799
          Jesse Radley bap. 19/04/1801
          Lucy Radley bap. 09/10/1803
          Charlotte Radley bap. 04/09/1808
No mention of son William Robert Radley, although he appears clearly enough in the census. From the census, I have John Radley (b 1799) as married to Sarah A. Radley and, from BDM, his death as (probably) Oct quarter 1854 Orsett 4a 74.
As for the death of John Radley (b 1769), BDM gives two possible options, Jul quarter 1841 Orsett 12 109  or  Apr quarter 1846 Orsett 12 123. Parish records should hopefuly separate the two.
                               Have a good Christmas.
                                              Regards,
                                                     Scobie

Hi Scobie , a great bit of research, I havn't got John's birthdate, I had estimated 1800 so was very close, Jessie and Charlotte are new to me,thanks for those as somebody else is looking for Charlotte Radley details so that helps them.
The one I am really looking for now is John Radley born in Orsett about 1713 - 1725.  I have his sisters Susannah b1713 and Marie b1714,married 1749 both born Orsett, the parents are John and Mary who married in 1713 Orsett and he or the  missing son John was a church warden at Orsett in 1756 for one year only. The earlier John had a brother Robert who married Sara Murrel in 1719 at Widford, I have their line up to 1764. I think the difficulty in finding John is because the parish records are badly damaged for those years, perhaps I will find a later link next time I go to the ERO.

Regards, Chris

Hi Chris.
I had another look at the I.G.I. for any Radleys, but the only ones mentioned are those I've already found. There may well be many more in the parish registers, but not covered by the I.G.I.
I also have had problems with some parish registers being damaged or so faded as to be virtually illegible. Occasionally I have only been able to work out names and dates by knowing the christian names and/or surnames of parents or offspring that I am looking for and barely deciphering them that way. But there are always going to be those that are just impossible to make out and are probably lost forever.
Good luck with your future research.
                                      Regards,
