Oil refiners Liverpool
« on: Friday 29 February 08 10:50 GMT (UK) »
Morning All,  (Am I in the right chat room for this question?)

Can anyone help me?  My grandfather, according to the birth certificates of a few of his children, was down as an oilmill labourer/oil refiner's labourer.
The period was from about 1913 to 1922.  Anyone any idea where I might find out about oil refineries in Liverpool at that time?

Thanks.
Tony

Hi Tony

I guess it should be on the Lancashire board?

As for oil refineries in Liverpool - I would try the directories (Gores or Kellys?) for the relevent years. I would imagine it was over the other side of the Mersey (don't know when Stanlow opened). Mind you, it could include mineral oils?

Hi Tony !

I'd say try looking around Scotland Road in Liverpool !! or the docks ! but Scottie Press may be able to help you ! read their web pages ... some amazing stuff on there !!  :)

Of the Vauxhall area as early as 1851 it had been written that besides the docks, the railways and the canal the "great features of the quarter are... the manufacturing establishments and warehouses". By 1908 coal yards, gas works, engine and boiler works, oil mills, chemical works, breweries, sugar refineries, artificial manure works were concentrated in the neighbourhood. The environment was described as "unsavoury" with noxious fumes and vapours emitted from alkali works on Vauxhall Road.

If you Google .. you'll be able to read about the strike in 1911 that involved the Oil Mills !

Maybe of interest !!

Kelly's for 1911 has almost a whole page of listings for oil manufacturers and refiners in Liverpool - page 1,945.

If you'd like a copy of that page Tony, send me your email address by PM.

Shaun - what do you mean, send you my email address by PM. What's PM? Do you mean by this afternoon?  Or does it mean something technical? It's a bit early on a Monday morning for the brain to be at full power yet!
