The William Pirie mentioned in your post was married to a Jane Gardiner.
Jane Gardiner's sister Elizabeth Margaret Gardiner married William Wood (Wildie Post) in 1882.
They were my husband's great grandparents.
Elizabeth Gardiner had a daughter prior to her marriage - father was Alexander Goodbrand!
William Pirie's son John Pirie b. 1881 married Helen Slater b. 1878.
This Helen Slater was the daughter of George Slater b. 1854 - elder brother of the afore-mentioned John and James Slater.
The father of the Slater boys was George Slater 1823-1899.   His parents were William Slater and Ann Wood (Wood Post).
Wildie Wood was the grandson of Ann's brother John Wood Post.

There are several other twists and turns, and marriages of course, linking these families!
If anyone is interested in Wood Post let me know - I have rather a lot of certificates!

My grandmother,  Mary Sutherland, was the daughter of Jane Goodbrand.  She had five children, Helen Mair - my  mother -  Mary Mair, Georgina Mair, William Mair, John (Jack) Mair;  my mother had two daughters, the others had no children.

Hi Canadia

My Great grandmother was Bathia Goodbrand. She was the first daughter of Jane Goodbrand born in 1861 before Jane married William Sutherland in 1868. Bathia married John Slater who was lost at sea in 1887. Bathia and John had three daughters, the oldest was Mary Slater born in1880 who was my grandmother. She came to Canada in 1906 and married Andrew Methven.
From your webname it sounds like you are also a Canadian.

Diane

Well, hello, Cousin Diane.  My grandmother, Mary Sutherland,  later Mair, would have been Bathia's half-sister then ?  I wish now that my grandma had spoken more about her family.  I lived with her when I was a child because my mother fell under a London bus when I was a baby and never fully recovered.  So it was Portsoy for me for a long time.   I know that there were a lot of Sutherland relations and that the Findlaters came into it all somehow.  I used to be hauled off to Cornhill and Deskford and Tillienaught and Sandend to visit people but I never knew just who was related to who.

Yes, I live in Halifax NS.               Jean
