Late / formerly?
« on: Thursday 28 February 08 12:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I'm posting on this forum as I'm new to RootsChat, and not sure where else would be appropriate, so Beginners it is!

I have the birth certificate of one of my ancestors (William George Cresswell Powell in 1852), and his mother is described as "Ann Powell, late Boulter formerly Kelson".  Which would be her maiden name?

There is both a Ann Kelson and an Ann Boulter in the 1841 census in Bedminster...and I believe that she married Thomas Woodman Powell in 1842 - having found a record of this in the IGI - but not FreeBMD oddly.

So, your thoughts on the late / formerly issue would be most welcome!

Hi - welcome to Rootchat, by the way

Galium is correct - my birth certificate has late ****, formerly Prescott for my mother, and her maiden name was Prescott.

Green sloth - welcome to RootsChat. I've just checked against the images for the full GRO indices (on FreeBMD via the home page) and there is no record of the marriage under either Powell or Boulter in the September quarter of 1842 (IGI date 5 July 1842). The IGI record is listed as "extracted" ie taken from the parish records - these are usually more likely to be accurate than "submitted" records from LDS members.
It seems that there is either a transcription error on the IGI - name(s) or date; or you have "found" one of the entries missed when the local register office in 1842 sent in returns for compilation into the national index.
If you want to check this out you could see the parish register copy of the marriage entry (at local records office or LDS family history centre) or ask Bristol register office if they have a copy of that entry (cost £7 as via GRO).

Thank you for your efforts.  I think that the IGI record seems about right as the birth of their first son was Q2 1843 in Bedminster.

I wasn't aware that I could get a register office to find a copy of the parish register entry...I had thought  I'd have to wait until I made a trip to the Bristol Records Office to look for myself.  How would I go about getting a copy from the register office - is it just a matter of giving them a ring, credit card in hand?

Many thanks again.

Sorry I realise that I've misread your response - it's the local records office or the LDS for the parish records.   Of course.

Thank you for your patience!

Green Sloth - if you're able to visit Bristol Records Office & they have the registers of that church then you can see the entry for free.
At the time I posted I didn't know whether this was a practical suggestion, hence the idea of contacting the Register Office (too many ROs!) - I've not had dealings with Bristol, but many local offices can be very helpful & won't charge if they can't supply a matching certificate (unlike the GRO who will charge for a search).

Best wishes for the search
