Thanks Raylen.  Jorose, what can I say - absolutely amazing photographs, yes they tie in beautifully.   I would never have thought such information was available nevermind knowing where to find it.   Thanks so much.

I have had a 'bad patch' with Family History and was ready to put it all to sleep and really wondered why I was doing it but I now know, the buzz has returned thanks to you all.

Another query if you don't mind - have found 2 enlistment entries -  also, any ideas what is R.A.G.A please

FORFAR DOUGLAS MAITLAND : Service Number - VX974 : Date of birth - 26 Sep 1919 : Place of birth - CARDIFF WALES : Place of enlistment - EAST ST KILDA VIC : Next of Kin - FORFAR MAY

FORFAR DOUGLAS MAITLAND : Service Number - 449077 : Date of birth - 26 Sep 1920 : Place of birth - CARDIFF WALES : Place of enlistment - MELBOURNE : Next of Kin - FORFAR GEORGE

Thanks again for your help - valry

R.A.G.A = Royal Australian Garrison Artillery, probably?
http://www.ozatwar.com/ozatwar/abbreviations.htm - big list of abbreviations here.

It looks to me like the record for Douglas that has images online is related to him joining up shortly before WWII, and then there's presumably a second set of records relating to his WWII service.

Valry,

How lucky are you that jorose found those photos! :)

Good find jorose!!

The only way you can get any more information on the 2 records for
Douglas Maitland Forfar is to order a copy.  Details are on the site.

R.A.G.A.  - not sure what it means.  Was wondering if it had something
to do with the other entry for Douglas M Forfar VX974 regarding a court martial in 1940.
Maybe someone with a bit of knowledge in this area will help out.

Good luck

Thanks again both for you input.   The photos are an amazing find.

I have just re-read his attestation papers and he was previously in 59 Bn Cadets.  He joined the 59th BN in August 1938 and was discharged in Feb 1939 then I think it probably says "'enl' in R.A.G.A". Now knowing what the letters mean helps it to make sense.  It would have helped if I had read it all properly in the first place.  I did look to see if I could get a copy of the CM but it is closed, but perhaps that is being just a little too nosy.

Hats off to you both - Valry

the CM is listed as "not yet examined". You can request it be examined
http://www.naa.gov.au/info/forms/acc-form.aspx
And once  this has been done, it will probably be available

There would also be mention of the court marial in his WWII record which is also currently "not examined"

Hi Valry,
I have been in contact for several years with Ann Forfar who lives in Victoria and is the daughter of Dougland Maitland Forfar. Her grandfather George Thomas Forfar was the brother of my grandfather James Honney Forfar. Are you in contact Ann? She is undertaking a 1 name study project on Forfars worldwide.
She has a wealth of info on the family but I have also given her info on the Forfars left behind in S.Wales. Would be happy to share my info with you or put you in contact with Ann.

Hi Roger,

I have stepped into the 'Forfar' family through the marriage of Ann's Grandfather Geo Thomas Forfar to May Dorothy E. Palmer - the Palmer's being my line of research.  I would appreciate if you could put me in contact with Ann as I have no information after the 1940's when all three offspring (Dorothy, Douglas and George) joined the Army during WW2 and it would be good to tie up the family.  I just may be able to help her in return with her grandmothers side.

Many thanks for contacting - p.s. noticed the surname.  I have Jones born Haverfordwest who moved to Swansea - have now lost them!!!!
