Please help - BiVRI and Vista problem
« on: Friday 02 November 07 19:48 GMT (UK) »
Dear all

I have owned and run (on Windows XP) the BiVRI for some time with no problems. I now have a new computer which runs Windows Vista (spit). I installed the Viewer and loaded a disc. I get the following error message:

Runtime error 339
Component Go Back Rf.ocx or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a filename is missing or invalid

This means nothing to me. When I did a Google search on 'Vista' and 'error 339' it brought up thousands of hits of similar problems experienced by people with all different programs and all seem to relate to 'older' software being incorrectly installed on Vista. The number of 'solutions' is almost as high including removing and reinstalling Norton (!) to blowing the little speck of dust off your CD (!). Nothing works. Please can someone who knows about these things, but can computer-speak to me in such a way as I will understand, what on earth I can do because I have the BiVRI and the Burials Index and can now use neither.
I live in hope - thank you.

Once you have installed the viewer right click on the icon created and select "Run as administrator" this may help solve the problem

Thanks for the rapid reply. I did actually try that one but it made no difference I'm afraid!
Thank you anyway :-)

Have a look at the whole thread, but particularly reply no 4:

It seems to have worked for at least one RootsChatter.  Fingers crossed.

When I installed the BVRI disks on my Vista machine I had to

Install original viewer
Run as administrator
Install updated version of viewer from BVRI Disks
Run as Administrator
Reboot and it then worked with no problem.

An alternative is to try running in compatibility mode
Right click on icon
select compatibility and select windows XP

Hi Falkyrn and Little Nell

I'm not trying to be dense (it comes naturally) but when you say that you installed the viewer, selected the 'run as admin' option and installed from CD - I'm not sure of what you mean. I installed from the CD.  The installation was, apparently, completed by the insertion of disc 1 (which appeared to install a patch) and then I tried to insert one of the data disks and at this point I received the error message. Where did you find the 'updated version' of BiVRI?? I also set the compatability (to XP with SP2) and 'run as administrator' but neither helped!

I followed the thread as suggested re. setting the Windows/System 32 but was denied access when I tried to allow 'users' to have full control - I couldn't even allow administrators that privilege! I am way out of my depth here :-(

I have BVRI2 ... the viewer supplied on the main viewer disk is version 4 on one of the disks (disk 1 I think)  there is an updated patch which sounds like the step you had already taken.

Sorry, now out of my depth - still using XP.  I only knew that the question had been asked and apparently solved recently.

I've not heard about any problems with the NBI, but the FFHS have put up some information on their website here:

Hi

I posted this query some time ago. Many people were helpful but I'm still having no success so I'm trying again.

First of all I couldn't run either the NBI or BiVRI on my new PC which is running on Vista. Now, after having successfully installed the NBI, I can run the program by right clicking on the icon and running as administrator. Next I thought I would try and install the resource viewer for the VRI. When I inserted the disk it did not autorun and so went into the directory and find the setup.exe. I tried to run this but, although it appeared to be starting the process within a second or two, I just got the message 'Resource Viewer is not installed' which is about as unhelpful as it's possible to be. Since I can't even get this program to install, running it as an administrator is a moot point. The viewer worked perfectly on my last computer, running XP. Please - can anyone help me? I feel quite upset by the fact that I have this entire set of disks that I can no longer use and no technical expertise to sort out the problem. Any help most gratefully received :-)
