Have a read of this and see if it helps:-

In addition to installing a program with Administrator privileges you will also need to run it in compatibility mode by the looks of it.

Hi

Thanks very much for your speedy reply but I don't have a problem with the NBI. I managed to get that installed and running using exactly the link that you just gave me. My problem is still with the BVRI - which I can't even install at all - so it's not a problem of running the program as an administrator but of installing it in the first place! It's very frustrating as I've only ever installed it once before (on my last PC obviously) so I can't imagine that there is a fault with the disk (why should there be?) I wondered if anyone had had this problem too??

Many thanks

If the program on CD has a number of sub-programs then it could be that you have tried to run the wrong setup program.

For instance, there may be an install.exe program that calls setup.exe during the install process.

At the root of the CD file system there might be a .ini file.  If so right click it and open it with NotePad and see what that says.  It will probably name the file that needs to be loaded to start the install process.

Brilliant - I never thought of that. I just clicked on the only application that I could find in the root. When I get home I will revisit the disk and see if this is the problem. With the autorun function not working, one is cast back (unsuccessfully in my case!!) to the days when you actually had to think what you were doing :-)) I will report back in due course. Many thanks once more!

It was just a thought but is probably not going to help.

I found this on the LDS website:-

Quote
If your computer is running Windows Vista and you are trying to use the Resource File Viewer:
Install the Resource File Viewer 4.0.
Right-click the Resource File Viewer icon on your desktop, and select Properties.
Click the Compatibility tab.
Check the box to run the computer in compatibility mode. Make sure Windows XP (service pack 2) is selected.
Check the box next to Run this program as an administrator.
Click OK.
You should now be able to run the program without any errors.

It seems to be the same answer for any Vista related problem.

Hello again

I'm home now and overjoyed to say that I found the appropriate installation file and used the 'tweak' and now at last have all systems go on the Vital Records. Many thanks again for your forbearance and advice :-)

Best wishes, Karen

BRVI Discs

I'm just on for a moan.

Santa brought me a new all singing all dancing laptop at Christmas and everything was going wonderfully well until I tried to install the viewer for the BVRI ans 1881 Cencus Discs - no chance!!

After about a dozen e-mails and phone calls to LDS, I was sent an updated 'viewer' which allows me to view the 1881 Cencus but not the BVRI's. I have continued to e-mail them asking if there is an even more recent viewer disk but all I receive in return is "Vista not supported"

So apart from suffering from severe withdrawal symptoms, I'm just a tad hacked-off that these are, and will become obsolete if people start updating their operating systems to Vista.

P.S. If anyone has any wonderful ideas or advice as to how to get round this little problem, please let me know, but I'd need the 'idiot's guide' how to do anything.

Woops - I hadn't noticed this thread - I'll get someone (who understands the jargon) to have a wee tweak.
