Kidlington Sodens Ancestry strikes again
« on: Tuesday 26 February 08 18:28 GMT (UK) »
Tree after tree on Ancestry (I stopped counting at seven) has a family for Joseph and Mary Soden they favour two different Marys all the same name children all with the same baptism dates BUT Family Search has apparently transcribed the Kidlington register C038622 1574-1837
The same children with the same baptism dates BUT parents Joseph and SARAH
PLEASE can some one check the registers for Kidlington for children baptised to Joseph SODEN between 1791 and 1806  and check the Mother's name. If the family search is right how on earth have so many people got it wrong? It just shows how important it is to see the original records for yourself and how important our members are who look up the records for those of us at a distance to the records we need

Trees,

I've seen this type of thing a few times now.   I think it is caused by people copying each other rather than carrying out their own research.

The Kidlington transcriptions for the baptisms all show the parents as Joseph and Sarah:
Thomas 1791
William 1793
William 1796
Mary 1799
James 1803
Sarah 1806
John 1808

Can't find a marriage for them in Kidlington.

Many Thanks Maggie jo I thought this was the case I can't write to all the owners of the Ancestry trees though But at least we know our research is sound. I wonder if they appear in the Oxford marriage Index/ I'll ask for a look up in the hope.

Hi there old friend,
Had a quick shufti at the OMI and came up with the following ;-
SODEN, Joseph, Epwell, HOWKINS, Mary, 22 Dec 1790.

According to the OMI - SOLDEN, Joseph, of Sibford Gower, Banbury, NICHOLLS, Mary married  23 Oct 1650.

Is that of any help? or does it once again make matters worse?

Yet again someone has been tellng porkies, I have found several similar annoying and frustrating errors over the years
Nice to be back again eventually.
 George.

Morning Hazel,
Thank you for the welcome back, as you will have noted I now have yet again another ndp and appear to be a total newie, however - all is aok at the moment, fiche reader and pc on same desk now with many additional new items associated with the Oxfordshire area.
The two moves over the past three months took it out of me but am getting back into the swing of things so look forward to receiving your 'Iban to do list' in due course.
Have been following your pub crawl of late with some interest, no doubt many of my ancestors supped in the very same establishments at one time or another.
Must get on with my brekkie.
Great to be in contact again, cheers,
George.

That marriage you have found is too early to affect the SODEN 's of note as the children 8 of them were born after 1791 so you have probably found an older generation. Anyway these are a very loose connection one of the daughters of Richard YOUNG of The DOG. On the subject of Pubs I found another to add to our list in Devon last week  ;D.

Dear Hazel

I researched the Sodens of Kidlington some eighteen years ago. Don't confuse the descendants of Washington Soden (166? - 17310 & Clary Dodd 666?-1734), who descendants were in Kidlington until the early part of the 19th Century with the family of Joseph Soden and Sarah Haslett. These Sodens appear to be a completely different branch, originally of Quaker origin. They pop up all over the county and seem to have been mainly blacksmiths. Joseph was baptized at Adderbury, Oxon.,  on 12 December 1764 and Sarah (whom he married on at Oxford, St. Michael, on 19 November 1789)was baptized at Kidlington, on 16 November 1769.  You can find all the Washington Soden descendants in the library of the Oxfordshire Family History Society, in my book, "The Dodds of Kidlngton".
