WO364 Mis-sorts: Unburnt Series Pension Claims
« on: Tuesday 26 February 08 00:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,  :)

I was wondering if anyone can advise me on how to discover if a set of records are contained within the above series?

I'm trying, without success, to locate the service records of my great grandfather Joseph Bennett. It then occurred to me that, as the records were not necessarily microfilmed in alphabetical order, his records might be within the 'mis-sorts' section.

So....I've had a look on the NA website, and think I've managed to narrow my search down to the sub-section below:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATLN=6&CATID=7812775&SearchInit=4&CATREF=WO364%2F5040

This covers the names 'Bennett, John W - Bentley, Douglas H', so, how do I discover if my great grandfather's records are actually in there? Do I have to request the information from the NA, giving them all the relelvant information that I have, and if they have it, they'll then copy it and send it out?

Where do I go from here?  :)

Regards

Paul

Hello Paul,
whether your John Bennett is amongst the mis-sorts needs sorting out by checking the microfilm.
ancestry.com have WO364 available but I am not sure if this includes the mis-sorts.
I have found stuff there, so they need to be checked.
Sorry, I now live away from Kew, otherwise I'd do the look up for you.
You never know, another lister might volunteer. Otherwise you will have to go down the route of NA doing your research (click the Research, Education tab on the home page banner).
Hope this helps,
Dave

Should include the missorts and after a quick look there are over 20 Joseph Bennetts listed, can you give more details?

Hi Alan,

The following is about as much information as we have:

Name:             Joseph Alexander Bennett
Regiment:       South Wales Borderers
Regt. No:        11053
Rank:              Private (Acting WO II)
Date of Birth:  10th September 1893
Place of Birth:  RhyndwyClydach (Street Name?), Ponterdawe district of Swansea
Parents:          Joseph and Johanna Bennett (Fathers trade: Steel Worker)
Trade:             Boiler Maker (Ship Builders)

Last known address (1901) 101 Pentre Estryll, Swansea

Medal entitlement:   Victory (g/1/101B3 page 297)
                                 British  (g/1/101B3 page 297)
                                 14 Star (g/1/6 page 15)

Date of Entry to theatre: 01/10/1914

.

I have contacted the SWB Regimental museum, and they summise that he most probably went out to France to the 1st Battalion South Wales Borderers on 1st October 1914 (hence awarded 1914 Star).  Was subsequently wounded (He was gassed), and posted to 3rd South Wales Borderers (draft finding battalion based at Sniggery Camp, Liverpool).   When fit posted to 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers. Writing on the reverse of a photo we have states he was in 'D Coy' 2nd SWB.

Many thanks...

Paul

Had a quick look through all the WW1 record currently on Ancestry, but can't seem to find your man.

Sorry

Thanks Alan,

So, might it still have not been uploaded to Ancestry, or is it more likely that it no longer exists? Would a physical search of the records at Kew still be worthwhile?

Possible it may not have yet been uploaded as they have not dealt with WO363 missorts, but as 2/3 of these record were destroyed during WW2, I wouldn't hold much hope of them being at Kew. I'll keep an eye out tho.
