FRANCE: Maurer & Muntce from Alsace
« on: Sunday 24 February 08 21:52 GMT (UK) »
I was hoping to get advice on how to find where these relatives came from. But having read the notice boards for French and German  Immegrants I am doubting this will not be easy if not impossible
Philippe Maurer and his wife Madileine Muntce came from Alsace to New Luce, Wigtownshire. Their son Philippe may have been born in New Luce or
Alsace  But did marry Elizabeth McDowall in New Luce on 2 Nov 1877 by which time his father was deceased
I don't suppose anyone has any connections with either side of this family on the continent?

You could try contacting the Centre Départemental d'Histoire des Familles at Guebwiller, which covers genealogy in Alsace: http://www.cdhf.net/fr/

Maurer is a fairly common name in Alsace, and apparently the family may have oriinally migrated there from Switzerland.  The name means "mason".

Muntce looks to me like an anglicisation of Munz, or something similar, but that's just a guess....

I've found out to do it and in case there is any one out there as slow as I am with this technology I'll explain:-
Go to "Google Language Tools" and then "Translate Web Page" and enter the site you want translated.

Hi Caro,

Dof will hopefully be notified that you have posted here. Do you believe you are related (e.g., did your Maurer's also move to Scotland?). If not, it might be best to split your message off to make a separate post.

I cannot find a place called Charvenay in Alsace - there are places with similar names, e.g. Chavenay in Yvelines.

The good news is that if we can locate the correct place, a lot of records are now online, including for both Haut-Rhin and Bas-Rhin (the two departments that make up Alsace).

Hi,

When was Philipp Maurer (son) born? How old was he when he married in 1877?
Muntce is not an Alsatian name.
And where do you have this information about Charvenay (not in Alsace, I agree with Jorose).
