Family Tree Maker 2008

Hi there,

I am thinking about buying FTM 2008. Does anyone know if the free 6 months Ancestry subscription can be used to access the .com site rather than the .uk site? I already have a subscription to the uk site and would prefer to use the free 6 months one for researching my husbands family in the US.

All the offers I've looked at clearly state .co.uk.

Why not buy the 2006 version instead - the difference in price is roughly 3 months' subscription to the US site!

I would advise against buying FTM 2008.  They have removed many useful features of the previous versions.  Personally I much prefer my 1995 version of FTM.

Thank you for your advice on FTM 2008.

I have heard that the 2008 version wasn't so good as previous ones so maybe I'll steer well clear of it after all.

I was just looking at it in the store the other day. I have the 2006 version, I think it is, and that gave me a year's subscription (.com because I am in the US). I wondered if I should upgrade and saw they only gave a few months and just laughed. And it cost more than the version I bought.

I find FTM 2008 an improvement on previous versions regarding layout.

Also, it doesn't replace previous versions when it's loaded so I've kept both and switch between them according to what I want to do.

Can anyone advise about FamilyTree Maker. Can you just upload a gedcom into it or do you have to add everything manually.

Also another question.
I installed Family Tree Maker 2005 SE, which was on a free cd in one of the family history mags. After installation there was about twenty icons on my desktop. I quickly uninstalled it as was afraid there was something wrong. All restored to normal.
If I bought for example FTM 2006, would it do the same thing.

At the moment I use PAF, but wondered if there was any advantage in trying something different.

Any advice greatly appreciated.
