IGI - can this be done?
« on: Saturday 23 February 08 09:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone

My question concerning the IGI is this: can one submit information extracted from the parish registers? Many of my ancestors came from Cheshire & this county is, so I'm told, poorly represented on the IGI.

If you contact the LDS, there is a [Contact Us] at the bottom of all their pages, I'm sure they can tell you how to send them your information.
I know they are looking for volunteers to do transcribing for them.

Thank you for yor reply.  I will contact them.  I've often wondered about this & thought it would be a VERY good idea.  It's really frustrating when you turn to the IGI & don't find anything.

Hi Jayson,

The LDS are digitising parish records and Cheshire are one of the first UK parishes on there.  It's free to register:

The LDS will add your extracted info but as a SUBMITTAL because it hasn't been verified.
Leonie is correct they are always looking for volunteers to do transcribing but they send you the images of the parish they are currently working in and you have to data enter into their software then send off the file for it to be checked!  Sadly you can't choose the parish because they may not have scanned the images yet or the church may not have released the records to them.

Durham is also part of the Digitised pilot scheme Jean mentioned - but remember they are  the Bishops Transcripts

Please acknowledge when a restorer works on your photos, it can take hours for them to work their magic

Please scan at 300dpi minimum to help save the restorers eyesight.

Have you tried FREEREG?

Their transcription forms try to capture all the information from the register into the transcript and if a parish that you particularly need hasn't been done yet, you can ask to do that one.

If you already have transcripts in a suitable form for any substantial part of the register you can also submit them.
