Tasmania BMD Lookup
« on: Saturday 23 February 08 03:50 GMT (UK) »
I received some convict records from Tasmania Archives today that confirmed that Henry Malladine, a convict transported in 1843 for 7 yrs, is our Henry Mallindine.  How exciting!  Some additional digging on the IGI turned up a birth and marriage in Tasmania and I was hoping someone might be able to check the records to see if there is any additional information.

Birth record for Male Mallindine, born on 2 May 1851 in Hobart, Tasmania.  Parents Henry Mallindine and Martha Martin.

I can't find a corresponding marriage record but it appears Henry married again some years later to Jane Mold at Chalmers Free Presbyterian in Hobart on 28 Apr 1877.

I can't find any trace of him after that.  Haven't seen him back in England so I assume he stayed in Australia.  This is my first foray into Australian searches so any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Thanks!
Lynwen

Hi Lynwen

Welcome to Australia  8) , but I have found very little information for you.

I have a copy of the AVRI which covers early Oz BDMs for NSW TAS VIC and WA. I can only find 3 references to the name Mallindine. It is a tricky CD to check for variations in spelling, but I looked for some close variations with no success
Male Mallindine born 2 May 1850 Father Henry Mother Martha Martin Reg 1851 ref 421
Henry Mallindine age 0 died 11 Aug 1851 reg 1851 ref 870
Henry Mallindine aged 54 married Jane Mold age 67 28 Apr 1877 ref 269

It would seem the young male may have died, my data gives 1850 as his birth & 1851 as the death (although age 0 in 1851 could indicate a birth year of 1851).

Despite civil registration starting in 1838 in Tasmania there do seem to be missing records

I did find the following death in Victoria
Henry Mallendine Father William Mallendine, mother Martha Unknown age 74 Place Sale year 1896 ref 7668.   I think this would fit to the age of the 54 year old Henry who married in 1877.

Trish, that is excellent!  Thanks very much.  The death is definitely our Henry as the parents match perfectly.  I just found the convict musters on ancestry and it states that he received his ticket of leave but there is no date.  I assume it was in 1851 when he completed his sentence.  So he stayed in Tasmania for at least 25 years before travelling to Victoria.  I wonder why he moved to Victoria and what took him to Sale?

I am so glad to finally find a link to Australia.  I went to uni in Melbourne and have very fond memories of my time there.  I had to look up Sale on the map but I am sure I must have stopped there on my way to Lakes Entrance.  I was really hoping his son had survived and spawned a whole load of relatives for me to visit!   ;D

Thanks again,
Lynwen

Given that the names match - you may want to buy the death certificate - it seems whoever was the informant knew his details, so there may be information on his wives & any children (seems unlikely). It may also indicate length of time in each Australian state.

The images are $17.50 au -  the reference number can be used to save having to pay another $ to look up

It seems his wife outlived him - I checked the next cd and found
Jane Isabella Mallandine died Father Jno Spence Mother Jane Elliott age 94 Place Sale 1904 ref 10442 - Father's name seems not what was expected

Hi,
Was it Jane Mold's second marriage do you think?

Modify......

No, I don't know.  She is listed on the   Tasmania Colonial family links site and said to be born 1810, but there is not information given about her family name. Just that she married Mallindine in 1877.

Hi Sue

I think that dob on the Tas links DB is simply estimated from the information available - i.e. her age at marriage. The second marriage is a definite possibility - perhaps she arrived in Tasmania with husband one - I will check for the death of a Mr Mold - she was significantly older than Henry - a prior marriage would seem likely.

Trish

Cannot find any useful records for Mold - in any AVRI state  :(

Trish and Sue - thanks very much for the additional searches and detail.  I think the assumption that this was a second marriage is probably correct.  I checked the Tasmania Archives again and couldn't find a reference to Jane Spence or Mold, convict or otherwise.

I downloaded Henry's death certificate from the site (thanks for the tip!) but Jane was not the informant.  I couldn't read the signature of the person who acted as the informant though.  Henry was a labourer and it states that he lived in Victoria 46yrs prior to death and that he married Jane Bell in Indigo (??), Victoria.  I thought it must be Bendigo but the handwriting is quite bad.  I wonder if Henry was glossing over his convict past and omitted any reference to Tasmania and replaced it with Victoria.  Oh and the death cert also mentioned that he had no issue so there goes my hope of discovering long lost cousins in Australia!  :'(

I don't know how much more I'll be able to discover but I really appreciate your help getting me this far!  I read that the online records of the Old Bailey are going to be extended past 1834 over the next year so hopefully I'll find details on Henry's conviction and add even more colour to this story.

Thanks again,
Lynwen

How interesting - strange that his wife was not the informant as it seems they both died in Sale - perhaps she was not capable - did it give a relationship for the informant? perhaps he/she received the information from Jane.

Many folks did indeed bypass their convict history in later life, so I would agree (if the certificate is the right Henry) that he conveniently forgot Tasmania. Jane seems to come with alot of names?

I don't see a suitable marriage in Victoria pre 1888 - did the certificate give an "age at marriage" or similar
