Possibly the Officer in Charge of Records at Lichfield has requested authorisation to dispose..

No idea why  :(

Hi Sarah

Is there anything written under the heading CORRESPONDENCE that may give you a clue? Does it sat what the medals were.

I am wondering if perhaps as the note was made in 1922 whether the family was trying to raise money or maybe the recipient was a bad boy so thewrefore didn't deserve the medals, or perhaps even, they were unable to find him or his family?

Perhaps a posting on the Great War forum will help. They have lots of experts on that site and who knows someone may have even discovered it and have an answer for you.

Jean

But it is possible as Jean says - they were unable to find him or his family ..... once returned -"Undeliverable"  medals were retained for a prescribed period and then broken up  ( meaning - scrapped ) any late claims of unissued previously returned awards had to be specially struck ....
Many times they were undeliverable in the 1920's - the soldiers wife may have  remarried or moved away  /parents may have moved or died etc !

But the guys maybe able to see something there we can't !!

I hadn't meant to say we hadn't any experts I just thought that as no RootsChatter had picked up on the posting just maybe Sarah would have more luck with the other site.

Hi  Annie et al  :)

I'd have to agree with Jean's comments.

Anyway, I too make it out to be:

OIC (Officer in Charge), Lichfield, requests Authority to dispose of medals (and the date of) 29.05.1922.
