Caister

Is anyone out there researching the Caister family?  I have an Ann Caister, married to James McLeish.  Ann was born in 1822 to parents Caleb & Elizabeth, but so far I have been unable to make a proven connection.  Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Lochlass

Have you any idea in Kent where any of these events may have taken place?  Might it help us to know the source of your information and/or when and where any of these persons next turn up?

Offhand, no.  The only Ann Caister I could find with parents Caleb & Elizabeth born at that time was in W. Ashford (source freebdm.rootsweb).  The family must have emigrated to Canada at one point as that is where Ann met her husband and married.  Her death certificate doesn't give me any more information than parents christian names & Kent as birthplace. Hope that clarifies things a little bit.

Hi Lochlass

Presuming this is when Ann first turns up, when/where did her marriage take place and is there any residence or other useful information given for her on the documents?

Is it her death certificate or her marriage certificate that names her parents?

Where do she and her husband then live?

Is there any connection with Zorra/Woodstock in Ontario, Canada?  I ask because there were a family of CAISTERs there who appear to have emigrated c1833.

I think it's probably more than co-incidence that the Canadian census of 1851 (East Zorra Township, Oxford County, Ontario) lists the following persons in the following order:

James CAISTER farmer b.England 33
Lucy b.Canada 34
Mary 7 b.Canada
Lavina 4 b.Canada
Stephen 3 b.Canada
Elizabeth 1 b.Canada

then a MONTGOMERY/BULLARD family

Caleb CAISTER farmer b.England 64
Mary farmer b.England 64
Elizabeth farmer b.England 29
Stephen labourer 25 b.England
Sarah labourer 21 b.England
Catherine LINE? servant 24 b.Ireland
Elizabeth COLLIN servant 20 b.Ireland

James McLEASH farmer 32 b.Scotland
Ann 29 b.England
George 2 b.Canada
Hellen 1 b.Canada
Ann DUNSTER 7 b.England
.........................................

If you look on the IGI http://www.familysearch.org you will notice that there is a Caleb and Mary CAISTER having children baptised in Walmer, Kent which would match some of those in the above census.  The baptisms for children of this couple appear to stop in Walmer c1822 - perhaps they moved on as there is a Caleb and Mary CAISTER having 2 daughters baptised in Paddlesworth, Kent 1828 - could at least one of those have been a late baptism perhaps :-\

Who was this Ann DUNSTER born England who, I assume, was living with the McLEASH family in the 1851 census of Canada?

:)  Thanks for that. I should have realised that just because I've got a certain name on a death certificate doesn't mean it's quite correct - I had that same experience just the other day with another branch of the tree.
This is the right connection as the McLeish family went to Ontario, Canada before some of the family migrated to Australia.
I can't help you with Ann DUNSTER at the moment, but I'll keep plugging away & something should turn up sometime.
Once again, thank you for helping me out.

Ann Caister was the daugther of Caleb Caister and Mary (Palmer) Caister of Zorra East Canada West.
See 1851 Census. James and Ann McLeash reside next door to Caleb and Mary. Elizabeth was a widow Caleb married after Mary died. They had no children. Caleb and Mary Caister are buried in Huntingford Cemetery in zorra East.

Thanks.  I've had a reply from a Robert Caister, also.  It's great to have Elizabeth sorted.
